A footy fan still longing for Sunday arvo games to return to Ballymore and Lang Park and to watch Coorparoo playing Morningside in the QAFL at Giffin Park.

I’d hoped Larkham would come back from the NH a better more rounded coach.
Without being close to the set up, and not speaking with any players in it, I’ve no idea if that’s the case. But until last weekend the side seemed to be rolling on nicely and without a lot of noise and fanfare.

I think Larkham has shown himself at different times in his career to be a quality attack coach. I guess the jury is still out on whether he’s a capable head coach.

Head coach is a tough gig.
We’ve seen stacks of very good assistant / skills coaches have a go at the top jobs around the globe and in Aus and fail.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t still valuable skills or assistants in the right structure, and some may be better coaches given time to learn and improve from, their mistakes.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

No Wallaby coach who won a World Cup had a playing background!!
Imagine that you’re a Dwyer or Mcqueen. You’re systematically and organisationally shut out and excluded by a cartel of ex-players.
What about your career as a coach and life?
Did you know that Rob McQueen’s introduction to Rugby coaching was as an assistant at the Waratahs in 1991 after he retired from playing Shute Shield?
He was an Australian selector the following year and an assistant in the Wallabies set up over the next 3 years and a selector again in 94/95.
Then he got the Brumbies head coach job in 1996.
Within a year he was the Wallabies coach.
So Rod McQueen was a SR head coach for approx 1 season before he was appointed Wallabies coach.
Rod McQueen’s actual coaching experience was scant compared with what you are asking of current players wanting to be assistant coaches.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

He was forwards coach with the Aus U20s.
Coached Easts in the Hospitals Cup.
Has played in Aus and France under different coaches – Jake White, Laurie Fisher, Robbie Deans, Ewen McKenzie, Fabien Galthie…
The role he plays at the Brumbies is as an assistant – not the head coach. His focus is defence, breakdown, and lineout.

Using capitals doesn’t make your argument stronger

And this doesn’t make sense given his current role?
Why can’t he find a head coaching position in Europe for a couple of years?

A head coach role in Europe is a higher level job than his current assistant job at the Brumbies is?

If Ben Mowen was applying for a head coach role at a SR club then your argument would be valid. But he’s not.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

What if they interviewed some more experienced coaches but Ben Mowen showed himself to be a better communicator and had some ideas and strategies that impressed the Brumbies management more than other candidates?

Just this morning we’ve offered a job to a guy who had the least experience of the 4 short listed interviewees, but clearly has the skill needed, has a great attitude, is a good communicator and seems very teachable.

If the skills are mostly equal, then I’ll always opt to hire the best attitude and good cultural fit ahead of experience.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

Yep.

It’s not as if it was a wave at the cameras for the crowd and viewers.
What else could that gesture mean?

Would be great to see.
But probably difficult to do when each team has their own jersey deal many are different to others.

NRL Round 7 Talking Points: With big wins come big losses, and which coach is the game’s biggest sook?

He’s already planting the seed for everyone to lower their expectations.

Did the same years ago when he took the Raiders on and kept saying that people shouldn’t expect much until he has some SOO players in the team.

Now, he’s talking about being in a rebuild phase and that we shouldn’t expect much from the young team.

Wait for it. He will explode about a referee at some point and talk at the press conference about “it is not fair, he has a team of young blokes busting a gut and getting scr3wed by the referees…”

NRL Round 7 Talking Points: With big wins come big losses, and which coach is the game’s biggest sook?

They pretty well all do something that way, but each is a bit different.
Some either donate a set %, all the profit, or a set $ per jersey sold.
Others auction the match worn jerseys and donate the proceeds. The Broncos are doing that, and matching the auction proceeds $ for $.

NRL Round 7 Talking Points: With big wins come big losses, and which coach is the game’s biggest sook?

Ahhhh…Dave Trewhella.
Forgot about him.

Until they renovated the SFS there would have still been remnants of the man size divot that was Dave Trewhella after Mal Meninga trampled him on his way over the tryline in a late 80s semi. 😂

Mal had what looked like 2 old ironing boards strapped to his arm after breaking it a couple of times.

This current Broncos forward pack is a long way from being the best they’ve ever had - is it the biggest?

Thankyou.
This season for sure.

The NRL stat that isn't one, but should be: Working out which forwards really pull their weight

And ERRORS!

I keep reading how so and so is a superstar, high in the Dally M and has amazing run metres, yet they are dropping the ball, not getting in position to take the ball, not in position to stop tries, didn’t pass to support and bombed a try, didn’t miss a tackle because they didn’t even attempt one etc.

A Tahs fan is an understatement.

RIP, David Lord: Australian sports journalism icon was 'always thoughtful and thought-provoking'

Nice tribute Tristan.
Met him years ago at the Oaks Hotel when I was living in Neutral Bay. There was a NRL replay on and we started chatting with him on RL then about Rugby, lovely bloke.
I certainly didn’t always agree with some of his opinions in columns on here a few years later, but you still had to respect his passion, if not always argument.
Vale Lordy. A full life lived.
Probably could have left out the gambling ads for once from a column.
Seems pretty tasteless to have it in what is an “in memoriam.”

If he can get fit he’d surely be good for Lynagh to have at 12 too.
A calm head and experience and another kick option.

Super Rugby teams week 9: Beale back for first time in 1494 days, Reds make 6 changes, Wallaby returns for Brumbies

Yep.
But I think he’s easily still a better option on the pine than Creighton.

I’d hoped Wright would shift to 7 but maybe Uru being injured has kept him at 6.
John Bryant will be interesting to watch at 7 as will Joe Brial off the bench. Both are aggressive at the breakdown and good ball runners.
Even with the outs, it is a solid Reds starting squad.

Blythe off the bench and a strong reserve front row provides a bit of confidence.

I’ll be praying for no injuries in the backs though. JOC would have been handy to have on the pine. What’s going on with him?

Great news.
Everyone in Aus Rugby would be hoping he can string the rest of the season’s game together and he gets himself into some good form.
At his best, he is our number 1 lock.

Wallabies star set to make timely return against Crusaders in must-win clash for Force

I think a smokey selection if he comes back in good form is Brendan Piakura for a bench spot.
Great ball runner, good defender, aggressive and can hit.

Certainly I’d have him in a wiser squad in camp. Over Horsburgh who’s been playing NSW Cup…

Wild idea but Blues should actually pick Origin team on form this time around - and that means Tedesco’s time is up

If you have a player that is getting the ball more than you want them to, then you have a coaching issue.
Players do what coaches ask them to and allow them to do.
If a player is always standing where you don’t want them to or is consistently in the way?
It is a coaching issue.

It would have been easy to reduce the times Gallen is getting the ball if he is not listening to your instruction and that is what you want.
Bench him, remove captaincy, and drop the bloke who keeps giving him the ball.

Otherwise the coach is weak as water…

The bloke I felt sorry for in the NSW side over the years was Mitchell Pearce. Some of the rubbish ball he got from Farah, particularly after RF had done his act at dummy half and fooled no one, and then thrown it late at Pearce’s head was miserable.

Oh, and I should add…I am no advocate for the bloke. I could not stand Gallen as a player.

Flogged us Gatesy! Well done to your boys.
I think my Tigers are in for a tough season.
I didn’t get to the game but my mates told me it was still a great day with a good turn out.

Apart from the score, the biggest issue of the day was the club has gone cashless and only accepts cards.
So the tradie boys who do a few cash jobs and have a pocketful of notes ready for a big day, all had to use their cards.
Can’t hide the enormity of that spend from the wife… 😂

None of us agree with the little stand being located in the can bar either.

COMMENT: Australian rugby is a depressing picture - the RA board must be axed and the constitution changed

I don’t agree on Gallen and apart from last year, Tedesco has been fantastic for NSW.

If I was a selector I would have picked Gallen in every side too.
If he was a QLDer he’d be a Maroons legend. Cameron Smith and the others loved him in the Australian team.

The problem was not with Gallen, it was with his coach, dummy halves and playmakers.
He was always in position to take the ball and called for the ball, and that is exactly what you want from a middle forward.

Robbie Farah should not have been passing it to him half the time.
Mitchell Pearce and his 5/8 should have been given total control over playmaking by the coaches and both Farah and Gallen told clearly that he calls the shots.
He was not always the best play option, yet Farah kept passing him the ball.

People called Gallen a “ball hog” but he had a huge motor and was simply always ready to run the ball.

When Michael Ennis went to Cronulla early on you could see him overcalling Gallen and ignoring him.
Gallen got pi55ed off but soon realised Ennis was not going to change, and what he was doing worked. Obviously there was also support from Flanagan at the time too so Gallen was used differently.
He still took a ton of hit ups and ran a ton of metres, but when there was a better option, he was ignored.

Great work Ben.

Whilst I try to be positive about players, I also acknowledge that I struggle to let go of a clear flaw in someone’s skills and can fail to embrace the quality of the whole of the package.
I did it just this week commenting on Tate McDermott.

There are a few on here who you could place bets on the timing and content of their comment.
If there is any mention of Will Skelton on here there’s one fellow odds on to comment negatively…

A few weeks ago there was the anti Taniela Tupou brigade.
Only takes a few wins and him clearly playing well for them to stop. But 3 losses will see them tell us Tupou is fat lazy and overrated again.

Enough of realistic expectations, let's get excited about future Wallabies

That’s not good.

'Not ideal': Reds star duo cop Super Rugby bans after red cards - but where's the consistency?

what’s happened to Cormac Daly?

He was in the squad that played the Brumbies 2 weeks ago but Kiss gave him last week off including no club rugby.

With Blythe back but now McReight is suspended we should see Wright at 7, Uru shift to 6, with Smith and either Blythe or Daly packing at lock.
Otherwise I suspect Daly might have had to make room for Blythe given Seru’s good form.
