Donald, champion, I invite you to do the same.
We clearly aren’t going to find any other common ground.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Well, we can only ask!

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

As you know, I’ll always admit when I’m wrong.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Because it would be their specialty?

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Because they run the game! They are in charge of it.how much more relevant could people be?!? If there’s an issue with the game let’s go straight to the top, immediately post game, the same as we do the coaches. I promise you that the broadcasters and the media at large would adore post match V’Landys / Abdo pressers that immediately follow the game.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Both rules are in the ops manual. One is enforced – that has no impact on game play – the other isn’t that does impact.
So what is the NRLs priority? The game or the broadcasters?
Seems it is the broadcasters.
Why do the broadcasters want the pressers? To get viewers. What gets viewers? Sensation. A coach going off is sensation. It’s deliberate voyeurism with little care for the humans involved.
You’ve made it very clear that you don’t care a bit about that overall context and believe that each coach is fair game, extenuating circumstances are irrelevant and that money rules the game and that is just fine because that’s the way it is everywhere.
I believe that we need to address the disease not just smash the symptom for the entertainment of the masses.

I cover rugby league. I’m not on a crusade.
The forced pressers clearly pose a risk of coaches saying things they regret in the heat of the moment.
You can claim all you want from your cheap seat that they oughta be able to do this and shoulda done this but they are people. This is a risk for them with an easy triage.
Why would you fight against that?
Are you frightened it would deny you of opportunities to parade your moral outrage?
People are human. They stuff up.
Especially under pressure. Especially in the heat of the moment.
Just because they get paid lots of money isn’t a good enough justification to not care about their welfare.

Do you really think his statement was that of an emotionally balanced, cool headed person at that point in time?

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Yeah, what would I know about who fronts the media after 30 years involvement…

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

So is it ignorance or apathy? Because it appears to me that you don’t know and you don’t care.
Thanks for commenting though.

Mick, the White Australia Policy was an abhorrent policy that, once ration prevailed, was abolished because it was seen as the stupid, racist and insular thing it was.
It seems totally bizarre that upon a time lots of people didn’t have a problem with it at all. It took a spectacularly long time for people to see why it was an outrageous set of rules.
Coaches being forced to talk directly after games – while nowhere near as an important issue – will be seen as an illogical and high risk rule with little consideration for the welfare of the individuals.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Fair enough Jane. Would you be ok if that happened the next day though, instead of directly after the game? That would give time for cool heads to prevail.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

No Don. I’ll totally own Ricky making an error. He did. No question.
That a compulsory event is in place which clearly means this sort of incident (a coach unable to constrain their emotions, getting upset and saying something bad that they regret) is a likely consequence is a very relevant point to raise.
Remove – or at least modify – the platform and minimize the risk of occurrence.
That’s just common sense.
UNLESS you want the occurrence. In which case they should carry on as they are.
But people can’t just play the “it’s all the coaches fault” line. They wouldn’t even be there to stuff up if they weren’t forced to be.
But if it is fair game to make coaches do it, how about we force Abdo and V’Landys in front of cameras within 30 minutes of full time after each match to answer questions too. I guarantee the broadcasters would love it. Hell, I’d love it!
What’s good for the goose surely is good for the gander, right?

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Nope. The media only got involved because of the popularity.
They only got involved when they smelled money.
Those of us who love the game, love our clubs, make that popularity.
We now have a situation where the game is used as an entertainment product that generates revenue.
That is a logical progression. But it must not be allowed to be the only concern. People must also be considered and cared for. We can’t allow a world where financial interests completely override the rights and welfare of actual people.

NickoM, each club has a media person. They would be the logical person to go to the presser. Press is in their job description.

Damn Nat, what have I told you about pointing out my hypocrisy?!?
Stupid Nat. Stop remembering stuff please.
Yes I said that.
Yes that makes me a hypocrite.
Yes, in light of what I’m saying now, I retract my Darius comments.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

I’ve heard you last point made before. It isn’t outside the realms of possibility.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Absolutely he could and he should have. No question.
But we know losing coaches post match will be upset. Maybe angry. We should give them far more time at least before they have to talk. Like the NRL take before Annesleys monday presser. Then Ricky might not go off and Sslmon doesn’t get maligned.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Hang on. Who got who to take an experimental needle now?

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

So you’re acknowledging it constitutes a clear risk.
Good.
We’re getting somewhere.
Along those lines then, let’s make the refs do post match pressers and have Abdo and V’Landys do a post round presser too.
It’d be great viewing. I know it’d get masses of viewers.
But instead they roll out spokesman Annesley on Monday, well after the smoke has cleared and there’s been time to create spin and construct an agreed line on events.
Imagine if coaches had the same rights as that?
Or would that be too logical and non/hypocritical?

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

RR, all of those people and their duties are central / pivotal to their jobs. How on earth can you say a press conference is an essential part of coaching a football team? Because the broadcasters demand it? That can’t be considered a good enough reason to say it’s essential to their role. Only a crazy person would say that.
Big business doesn’t send out the Chairman or the CEO they send out professional spokespeople. Yet we are forcing the coaches?
And Security guards don’t have as much at stake. And with all due respect, your view from the grandstand doesn’t give you a full understanding of the pressure coaches are under.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Don, I’ve made my point clearly.
I’m clearly saying Ricky was wrong. But Anybody who sees a horrible situation like this happen and doesn’t look at the broader context to see how it can be avoided in future, who just wants to lay all of the blame in one place, is guilty of gross simplification and poor logical processes.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Don, over two of the 16 coaches get sacked every year. The media constantly hunts their scalps. I’d call that pressure. Lots of pressure.
ALTHOUGH it does remind me of Keith Miller saying pressure is a Messerschmidt on your ass, not playing sport.
All things are relative.

Sticky situation: NRL should enforce a few more rules in Operations Manual after Stuart's spray

Agreed. He knows it too.

I think the eight is now set
