it is not important what you start, what is important is what you finish.

Not sure what happened to my previous reply – must have disappeared in the cloud so I’ll try and retype.
I agree this article is about stats. Stats that the author is saying indicate that roar should have conceded more goals than they have. I believe Jamie Young, doing his job as you say is the primary reason behind this. My view is that it if you haven’t watched the games it would be very easy to look at the results of those last 9 games and presume that roar have an organised defensive unit. What I am saying is that Jamie Young has made some outstanding saves while doing his job during that period, often multiple times in a match, to deny the opposition when they had beaten the rest of our defensive unit. This has meant the GA and clean sheet numbers in isolation make it look like roar have a great defence but that hasn’t really been the case it has often been a one man show. For example, Jamie Young’s price in fantasy league has doubled in that nine game period, increasing each round except one. Conversely Tom Aldred’s price dropped every round in the first 6 rounds of the 9 you cite and has only started increasing again recently. I agree that over the last three games we have looked more organised in defence and the midfield are definitely less of a shambles too which has also helped. But over that nine game period on paper roars defensive unit as a whole appears much better than what it has been on grass.

Don't be sucked in by recent form, raw Roar still have to improve

Exactly it is about stats and the article is saying the stats indicate roar should have conceded more goals than they have. I’m talking about a false sense of organisation – not security. What I’m saying is that if you weren’t at the games watching what happened and how those scorelines occurred and only looked at the goals conceded figures you could easily be fooled into thinking Roar have enjoyed an organised defensive unit – but that just isn’t true. In reality Jamie has been doing his job exceptionally well over that 9 game period (for example his fantasy league price has doubled in that nine game period increasing every game except one, whereas Aldred’s price has dropped every round of the first 6 of the games you cited and has just started to climb again in the last three). In a number of those matches Jamie has pulled off some incredibly good saves – often multiple saves per game – to deny the opposition when they had beaten our defensive unit. There is no doubt the last three games we have looked much more organised and solid at the back (even though they have conceded 4) and the midfield is no longer the shambles it was either which has also helped – but I maintain that over that nine game stretch we have largely Jamie Young to thank for doing his job so well and minimising the number in our goals against column, and in my view making our defence during that period appear on paper to be better than it was on grass.

Wellington 2 Western 0 Western look out of ideas and legs
Adelaide 2 WSW 0 Wanderers don’t look up to 90 minutes
Roar 0 Perth 0 – Robbie’s primary strategy is clear – don’t concede. Two defensive walls (Jamie Young for Roar) will bounce the ball off each other
Jets 2 Victory 1 Newcastle to revive under new coach and the Irish Messi’s return
Sydney 3 CCM 1 Three first half goals for sydney while they have the energy before they get weary and concede down the stretch.

A-League expert tips and predictions Round 20

It is a shame that WU have reverted to some of the tactics they have employed – from my casual observations they weren’t that evident early in the season where I quite enjoyed the way they played which was some pretty lively direct attacking football. Maybe as the season has gone on and older legs have tired the tactics have changed. We have probably all played against teams that take time wasting and milking fouls to the extreme it is frustrating as a player and frustrating as a spectator as the game never gets going. I hope that Brisbane can keep their composure and that the referees are ‘on to it’ and use their cards to stamp it out early in the match.

Sunday's clash in Ballarat is the grudge match of the season

Pretty sure the existing A league clubs wouldn’t be too keen on a 2nd division – no benefit for them being faced with relegation.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls shows plenty of promise in A-League debut

I think the inclusion of Grant will be interesting. On the one hand he is a fouling machine, but on the other hand he’s tough, gets forward and puts the ball into useful areas so I’m all for it. Kruse being out is no loss. Goodwin deserves a crack at this level. I hope Boyle starts.

I thought our chances would have been vastly improved if the midfield didn’t put their foot on the ball so often. You could see the strikers making runs but they were never ‘fed’ and the delay then allowed a well organised Korean defence to get back behind the ball. If Maclaren got the sort of service sydney FC dished up he would have been in his element. Terrific save by Matt Ryan to keep us in with a chance. Thought our defence looked pretty well organised, thought the Koreans were clearly testing us out when we pressed by playing long direct balls. Boyle the Scossie looked lively when he came on admittedly with fresh legs late, nt sure why he didn’t start with Macca given they both play up front togther at Hibs – would have preferred that to seeing Kruse given we know what we get on that front – expect we’ll see Boyle more on Tuesday. Good crowd in despite the first half drizzle – the radar looked scary late in the afternoon but it all ended up well north of Brisbane fortunately. To the people who left the ground before full time, I hoop you enjoyed the roar of the crowd as you walked up Caxton st. Must admit that my own response to the gol was tempered by VAR experience now and instead of leaping to my feet I was left in my seat closely watching the linesmans flag and thinking this is going to VAR. I guess we have to live with that now but it did detract from the experience – and certainly a lot of people who hadn’t been exposed to the VAR were wondering what was going on. Excellent support for the Korean team too and I wonder if Brisbane Roar might consider signing some Korean players in future to try and take advantage of that local support – thought the same when we played Japan. There is plenty of support for other teams in the region here in Brisbane. Finally, I thought an opportunity lost for the Roar to promote themselves and the A league. Perhaps instead of girls handing out strip club promos as the people leave the ground, the Roar could have been handing out promos for the next A league match as people left.
