Rayo are considered the third side in Madrid quite comfortably I’d say (albeit third with a gaping chasm for sure). And yes, they are awesome in nearly every way. They even have a rather amusing song about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEys6s7KxKw
Near-perennial top division status doesn’t necessarily equate to fans, as Getafe show. They consistently draw some of the worst crowds in top level professional football.

Yep – certainly no suggestion that Liverpool are minnows from me. I understand they’re better resourced than most in the Premier League. I’m simply suggesting they don’t have either the raw spending power, or anything like the transfer market draw, of their title rivals.
Though the gap between traditional best and rest is much wider in Spain, this is also true to a certain extent of Atléti. Whilst the probability of them doing as well as they have against the big two would have been infinitesimal, they’re the only ones who have any chance at all. My team, Athletic Bilbao, are in fourth, and have done enormously well to get there. But it’s almost inconceivable that they could have performed any better.
