A red headed half back. Played at a few country clubs with some dubious representative appearances, and dabbled in subbies later in my career. Also some dubious writing experience with several fairfax regionals. Peerless chatter on the field and a cheerless prattler off it!!!

The Preacher Man; Michael Jones. The man of such faith that he declined the All Black jersey on several occasions in observance of the sabbath but is still regarded as the best ever in many circles.
In a time when forwards moved slowly to every ruck and breakdown, Jones re wrote the book on how a flanker could play the game. The sheer amount of ground Jones covered and his ability to read the play and (often single handedly) stop opposition momentum was peerless.
In an era when ruck infringements were policed with opposition studs, it was perhaps his ability to withstand rucking that earned him the greatest respect from opponents and fans alike.
Hard but fair, the preacher man was a true gentleman of the game, who arguably started the evolution of the modern fetcher no7!

The Magnificent Sevens: The best openside flankers in rugby history

Not sure that I have ever disagreed more strongly Spiro!?!
I suspect this is purely to fill your quota of articles and sincerely hope no-one takes it seriously. In fact your simplification of the similarities between the two games sounds like that of a complete rugby outsider, and your failure to grasp and assess the dramatic differences is probably why you mistakenly think that NFL coaching would work in rugby?
Another fact which you failed to look at re the ‘intellectualisation” and over-coaching in NFL is due to the fact that it is illegal to pay players at high school and college, hence the enourmous salaries paid to coaches and their massively funded multi-million dollar programs which are funded by sponsorship and philanthropy, which then feel the need to deliver something tangible so they engage greater analysis and sport scientists, and specialised coaching staff etc etc because the game generates millions in revenue and coaching is its ONLY expense. Its exactly the same situation created by the salary cap in NRL and AFL which has led to Wrestling coaches and the supplements scandal.
I for one would HATE to see anything from that ridiculous game infect ours!
Our supporter base is being eroded enough without the horrific americanisation that you are advocating here.

SPIRO: Rugby can learn a lot about rugby from gridiron

I hope you might reconsider Scott.
I have always found your video analysis to be excellent and better than anything provided by any other rugby outlet (sorry Tug Boat) Whilst not always agreeing with some opinions I think it is a shame to see you go and I would love to see your video analysis continue somewhere.

FAREWELL ROAR: Bickering a symptom of troubled times

Soapit Im not normally a huge believer in such ethereal concepts as ‘combination’, its an intangible and rare quality… but occasionaly people like Horan/little have displayed that innate understanding and simpatico that comes over time spent on the paddock together. And even more rarely you get something like Beale/Folau who with very little history and virtually no prior knowledge just find a commonality and familiarity that allows them to complement one anothers ability.
Watching it at the Waratahs these last two years has been freakish. While I dont have the stats, I would have to say that 80% of Folau’s tries and linebreaks have come from a Beale Pass and 90% of Beale’s tries and linebreaks have come from NOT throwing the last pass as the defenders all swarm toward Folau. In fact it even became laughably predictable at times when Beale moves into 1st reciever, particularly late in second halves, and he is only looking for ONE set of hands. predictable but still effective.

French-style defence and Kurtley Beale needed to reignite Wallabies

lol Just assumed that they would avoid the temptations of staying in Dublin this time Poth!!!

French-style defence and Kurtley Beale needed to reignite Wallabies

Tend to agree Brett. I think now is the time for experimentation and building some depth for next year.
might be time to rest Foley and see if a Toomua – Lealiifano pairing can help them both re-produce their provincial form. Suppose White gets a run and surely Speight is up too. Would it be wrong to swap the waratahs for the brumbies backs?

Everyone gets a game: Time for Cheika to just try stuff
