Club rugby, in particular the Shute Shield, has been thrust into the teeth of the current broadcast saga currently being undertaken by Rugby Australia.…
Dear Basketball, Kobe Bryant's brilliant, Oscar-winning short film, was a love letter to the game that gave him so much. It's a haunting rewatch…
'Ambitious' is the best word to describe Bill Pulver's decision to resurrect the National Rugby Championship in 2014. Ambitious for a multitude of reasons,…
Can it be? Perhaps the biggest underachiever in Australian sport, the NSW Waratahs, actually look like a darn good rugby team. Of course, it's…
Agree. Phipps was the match winner in that game. Gordon has the athletic ability and running game but so far seems miles off the temperament and poise to close out games at this level.
Too soon for doom and gloom at Waratahs?
I wasn’t writing to provide answers today, just informing RA there aren’t too many in club land in solving the professional downturn.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
Club Rugby fans riding the crest of a sensationalised wave that do not fully comprehend how difficult it is to run a football club. locally, let alone in a national competition.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
I hope it wasn’t me with the stiff arm!! Agree on all points mate.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
Yes but unlike Super Rugby squads 1st Grade players are littered with mid twenty year old players who by the time they get to about 26 say “you know what, I love this club, I’ve got a steady job, my ‘agent’ has stopped calling, the Tahs jsut signed some kids out of his first XV.. maybe just maybe, this is as good as it gets for me”
That is why we are successful.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
Agree, the fact that NSW based teams have struggled badly does not help the narrative. I can see it’s merits in what it offers super rugby teams with a stronger alignment between club, NRC & Super.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
Perhaps, I’ve considered a few models but I just don’t see any longevity to it I’m afraid.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
But in a proposed national club competition not all will have professional ambitions, they will be there because they have a love for their club and because their simply won’t be enough players available. NRC is there for the aspirational players, the fact it is not working along with Super Rugby is a professional problem not an amateur one.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
As I stated, CRTV has played a major role in elevating the competition in the minds of the rugby public. But it’s rude health is overstated and most of those with a sound understanding of how the clubs operate will see the enormous challenge. I don’t think they are short sighted, naive maybe.
National club comp lacking a grassroots perspective
You were obviously playing for a poorly run club with bad leadership, structure and culture. That’s unfortunate. I know the club I’m involved in has en exceptional community involvement. I’m sure there are clubs out there that don’t try and that’ disapointing, perhaps my club is a rare breed.
The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault
Love a bit of venom Mr Tiger man sir.
As I stated in the article I’m not saying there is never going to be a time for 3rd tier and I hope there is. Much of my argument is that we already have a existing competitions we could mould into a 3rd tier format and given teh fact we’re only 4-5 months till this comp launches is it really going to get off the ground?
Anyway it’s an opinion piece not the gospel buddy, fell free to share your own sometime.
The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault
Not doom and gloom Jamie, just highlighting the timing doesn’t appear ideal and they’ve never really given club rugby a fair shot. Not telling anyone not to support it, but perhaps for the time being they should try different avenues to get a foothold in the marketplace. Open to hearing your opinion….
The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault
Agreed. It’s also important to note that it’s not all rosy in the NPC either. They’re struggling with attendance and Southland required a $1.5M prop up jointly funded by the NZRU. Surely that is concerning to Pulver.
The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault
Perhaps off the back of a RWC win would do it some wonders though!
The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault
Matt Lucas deserves a shot. Matthewson is the best signing since Giteau at the Force.
Despite NSW's good start, Cheika and McKenzie have problems up ahead
Rigid was actually a compliment Bennalong! I meant his kicking and passing game is firm or really tight. His overall game is great, I agree he changes it up well. He will put pressure on Quade if he keeps it up.
Waratahs actually look like a darn good rugby team
The test will come when KB has to defend guys like Nonu and Fruen et al
Waratahs actually look like a darn good rugby team
Jocko, happy to have a beer with you after any Shute Shield game you nominate this season and I’ll give you my thinking from the inside out.
