Tony, thanks again for a great season of NRL articles here at the Roar. You have provided much entertainment to us all through your incredible amount of research you must have put in ! Hope you have great “off-season” and fingers crossed we get in some Test cricket and some good NFL matches ( Go Chiefs!). 😊

The A to Z of the NRL's 2021 season

And another thing ! The Storm need to get better script writers, as those guys had awful trouble reading their statements to the media . 😛

Four NRL players cop fines and suspensions for bringing the game into disrepute

But you would have to fine Munster more just for that terrible Riverdance he displayed to the world ? That certainly brought the game into disrepute ! 😛

Yep ! I think his form has been ordinary this year. He has suffered not having Cam Smith’s direction. Jerome Hughes has been the Storm’s key half and game manager this year. Its no surprise that Nathan Cleary again overshadowed Munster in Origin and the Prelim Final this year.

Just remind me again, how many premierships did Roy Masters win in his 250 matches coaching Wests & St George ?

Did missing Mitchell cost the Bunnies a premiership?

Just adds more creedence to my belief that coaches have minimal impact on performance compared to the quality of the cattle they have to put on the park !

Cleary confirms it: There are just three kinds of successful NRL coaches

When I look back on my forecasts, I am reasonably happy ? The Raiders buggered my forecasts.
1. I tipped the Panthers to win , but beating the Raiders in the GF !!! Big fail there.
2. My top 8 was Penrith, Raiders, Souths, Roosters, Melbourne, Parramatta, Knights & Sharks. Missing the Manly / Turbo resurgence and the Titans scraping into the 8.
3. Tipped the Tigers for the spoon . Who thought the QLD teams and Dogs would be that bad ?
4. Tipped NSW to win the Origin series 3-0 . But Cleary & Luai were injured for game 3 !
5. Tipped Nathan Cleary for the Dally M – Injury got him again.

Revisiting my five fearless predictions for the 2021 NRL season

Since 2007 Ivan Cleary has coached 14 seasons – 344 matches for 3 Grand Finals for one Premiership
Since 2007 when Wayne Bennett first left the Broncos he has coached 14 seasons – 404 matches for 3 Grand Finals for one Premiership
Is there really that much difference between a “nobody” coach and a “super” coach ?

Cleary confirms it: There are just three kinds of successful NRL coaches

Brandy would be one of the few who really understands what a monumental effort that was by the Panthers with so many players carrying significant injuries into that Grand Final. Quite a few will be in Hospital this week getting repair jobs done that should have happened many weeks ago.

Maloney & family love the south of France ! Won’t see them back here for a while !

Premiership window over? Harsh reality facing Souths as they deal with life after Bennett and Reynolds

Spot on Baz ! Cleary’s kicking game was pretty well perfect. But the whole team contributed to that win. The back three led the way with monster metres off their line despite a broken foot ( Edwards) & obvious syndesmosis issue (To’o). This comparison with the Souths back three was stark indeed, and a key aspect with Cleary’s kicking game to the Panthers winning this one. Then the Panthers pack was mostly dominant, at least defensively, till fatigue hit them at the end of each half when Souths grabbed their tries. The fact that they missed 64 tackles shows just how much scrambling, energy sapping defence, they had to come up with to restrict Souths to just 3 play the balls in their attacking 20 metre zone ! Fish & Leota were strong despite dodgy legs, in the first 20 to lay their platform, whilst Yeo , Api , Martin , Kikau & Capewell ( despite a couple of vital misses) were committed till the end. For Souths , I thought Murray was enormous and ably assisted by Koloamatangi and Cook. Walker was always a danger but generally well contained , but for that individual try performance.

NRL grand final player ratings: Who sizzled and who fizzled

I think Souths had all of 3 play the balls in the Panthers 20 for the match ! The result of a great kicking game and solid defence . Thank you Nathan !

I still can’t believe Royce didn’t get the medal in 1991 ! Gave it to Brad Clyde , Canberra’s best ?? Even he was embarrassed !

Cheers kk ! I’m pretty stoked with their grinding win. But a man’s work is never done. I have big task now trying to fix up the Kansas City Chiefs awful defense ! Might have send them a copy of the NRL GF ! Enjoy your off season.

Guts, game control and a gift from Cody Walker: Grand Final talking points

Cleary’s kicking game kept Souths in their own half for most of the match. You can’t win if you can’t get out of your half. He made 22 runs for 111 metres, had one consequential bad missed tackle on Walker when put off by Capewell, but controlled the game perfectly all night.

Gus must have had plenty on the Rabbitohs last night ! He was whinging all night about anything that went against them ?

Thanks Jimmmy ! Very pleased with that win . I was pretty confident we would win it this season, until the last few games with some significant injuries emerging that had to be managed. How do you play 4 weeks of finals at fullback with a broken foot ? Or a busted shoulder, or an MCL or dodgy calf injury , or an obvious syndesmosis injury, and still perform well ? Plenty of tough constitutions in that Panthers team. It was not the prettiest finals campaign, but they toughed it out. Particularly happy for the Clearys who have worn a lot of flak in recent times from the peanut gallery.

You can come up with all the stats you like. Like Penrith have beaten Souths 5 of the last 6 times they have met. Or Penrith beat Melbourne last week . When did Souths last beat Melbourne ? At the end of the day, I think there is only one issue of conjecture that none of us can really answer today : Will the Panther’s injury toll be just too much to be able to beat Souths on Sunday, or not ?

Why history and form will see Souths beat Penrith despite the odds

Panthers by 8 !

Why history and form will see Souths beat Penrith despite the odds

And a couple of stats that should concern you Big Mig ! Penrith have beaten Souths 5 or their last 6 meetings . And Penrith beat a full strength and rested Melbourne last week, something that Souths haven’t done for a while ?

The 50-point hoodoo is bollocks – the Rabbitohs are a red hot chance

Do Dally M’s and million dollar contracts count ?

The 50-point hoodoo is bollocks – the Rabbitohs are a red hot chance

If the Panthers were fully fit, I would be very confident of them winning this 2021 GF. But they aren’t fully fit. There are many of this team carrying significant injuries. So, Souths now have every chance of winning it. For me, the question is just how impactful the Panthers injuries might be in getting them through another tough 80 minutes ? Key match up will be the forwards in general, and more specifically the two number 9’s and the two number 13’s. The match should be decided here. The pack that gives some forward momentum to their halves will decide the contest.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Grand final

Please ! Who is being disingenuous ? I didn’t know where Api started his Junior career. That’s why I said “somewhere in Sydney.” I marked him as a Panther import. As I marked Momirovski as an import even if I might have also got his junior club wrong ?
I was simply responding to Pickett’s request for info on Local Juniors in the GF teams. You have done the Souths lot, I have done what I know of the Panthers lot. I’m sure this was not supposed to be a competition ?

Most Sydney fans dislike Souffs and Penriff, but they'll still be watching the grand final

Not sure what qualifies as a local junior when they might join the Club from the country at age 16 or 17 . Does that qualify them as local juniors ? Anyway take the Panthers GF team:
1. Dylan Edwards – joined Panthers as a 17 year old from Belligen.
2. Stephen Crichton – Local Junior – St Clair
3. Paul Momirovski – Import – West Tigers
4. Matt Burton – joined Panthers as a 17 year old from Dubbo
5. Brian To’o – Local Junior – St Marys
6. Jerome Luai – Local Junior – St Marys
7. Nathan Cleary – Local Junior – Brothers, Penrith
8. Moses Leota – Moved from NZ to Penrith at 13 – Local junior enough – St Marys
9. Api Koroisau – Import – Somewhere in Sydney
10. James Fisher-Harris – Moved from NZ to Penrith at 17 – Panthers SG Ball
11. Viliame Kikau – Import – North QLD.
12 . Kurt Capewell – Import – Charleville QLD via Cronulla
13. Isaah Yeo – Moved from Dubbo as a 19 y/o to play Panthers NYC team
14. Tyrone May – Local Junior – Michinbury
15 . Scott Sorrensen – Import – Cronulla junior
16. Spencer Leniu – Local Junior – Minchinbury
17. Liam Martin – Moved from Temora as an 18 y/o to the Panthers SG Ball team

A bunch of local juniors and country imports. Only 4 players here didn’t play their first NRL match with the Panthers.

Most Sydney fans dislike Souffs and Penriff, but they'll still be watching the grand final

But he tackles well in all positions and can ball play. He can be a 4th forward or 9, 6 , 7.
