I didn’t delete your comment. Thought it was perfectly valid. Will investigate.

Football has lost its soul in Australia and only the fans can save it now

Thanks that does help. That was not a glitch and the comments were never opened on that story. In some cases, especially involving court cases, we make the decision not to open comments and just post the story for its news value alone. I agree there seems to be an issue with the site in that it gives the impression you can comment on a story even when comments are closed – I will look into that. cheers

NRL 2022 Radar: Flawed signings strategy puts Eels on slippery slope

Because it’s backgrounding – no one is happy to go on the record, but they’ll tell you what’s happening. There are a few reporters all doing the same today, which suggests to me the players have been told and it’s leaking out. It’s the cricket writers’ jobs to find out that information and some of them are very good at it, and many are well connected. Having been on that side, it looks to me like enough people know and it can’t be contained. I understand from your perspective you want it official before you believe it but there are usually leaks in all sports.

'I never forgot how to hold a bat': Alex Carey ready for expected Test debut

Those are absolutely the key reasons active support has suffered. FFA under David Gallop, a best friend of known football hater Rebecca Wilson – supressed football’s essence because it was too foreign to him and those who he was aligned to in the media. Also, from a personal point of view as a Wanderers foundation member, the move to that soulless AFL oval in Homebush, along with the baord tanking it in recruitment, did plenty to take the wind out of the WSW active support.

There is a lot of backgrounding going on. This story, or all the others like it in the past 48 hours, aren’t guesses.

Yes it does happen as a technical glitch sometimes and sometimes the level of debate is such that it’s too time consuming to moderate (usually around vaccine talk). Would be really helpful if Dionysus was more specific though.

Well, he has apologised and the club has made a strong statement about him, which is news.

Hi all, this story has now been updated with Melbourne Storm confirming Smith staying in 2022.

That’s where you come in Andy.

Rebuilding active support is the biggest key to the A-League Men's success

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. It’s not really a space issue but more a workload issue of live cioverage for the likely return, and if we don’t have live scores available I’m not sure what the ‘content’ will look like with these. A generic cricket chat might be possible but I’ll have to have a think on it.
cheers

… unlike aggressive attempts to publicly shame someone without determing the facts? Correct.

It wasn’t an apology at all.

'Sh-t, this guy is nuts': Eddie Jones has a book out and of course it contains some absolute gold

Hi Carlos

First up, there are around 10 people who moderate The Roar comments. Obviously with thousands a day this is beyond one perspon alone, considering the other tasks we have.

I didn’t see your comment so am unsure on the subject matter within. Sometimes the filter flags certain words, sometimes your fellow Roarers will flag content they find offensive (not to say it always is offensive) and some times the moderators make a mistake.

There will be times, and this looks like one of them, when it’s like a referee calling a knock back and you think it’s a knock forward – we all just have to carry on with the game.

Another alternative is to ban all discussion of Covid and vaccinations etc and return to what we should be about. That is still under consideration.

Cheers Tony

There is no doubt ‘clickbait’ is a significant contributor to media companies’ income. It’s cheap and easy to do.

Also, the data we see shows it works – in the short term at least.

But I do think there is still a place for long form and investigative journalism and some good sources of such.

Every editor faces a challenge around how to nourish their readership and help keep the lights on.

My suggestion is when you see a piece you like, share it and support it.

Here are a couple of pieces from this week that I think deserve to be more read than this piece but probably won’t be..

Deep Point: ‘Some of the world’s greatest players watched his sessions in awe’

'Extremely concerned': Paine takes 'mental health break' putting him OUT of first Test with career in doubt

What also fascinates me is he and his wife gave an exclusive interview to the same media outlet that shamed him.

His choices along the way have been strange.

As a journalist I’m really keen to hear your thoughts on the Paine story and if you thought it should have been, or needed to be, published (I think I know the answer but interested in hearing it).

The story of the Paine messages had been floating around in cricket media for years. I heard about it a couple of years ago and there is no doubt other writers closer to the cricket round knew of it but chose to let it through to the keeper, as it were.

Was there any benefit to reveal it publicly at this stage? I can’t see there was, and the impact – on his career now and in the future, and his mental health, seems out of whack with the ‘crime’.

I imagine he regrets it not coming out when the initial incident happened and he was cleared of wrongdoing. He would have sailed through a minor scandal relatively quickly.

Cricket Australia comes out of the whole incident terribly for mine.

And how do you reckon England is reporting it … by focussing on If Billy and Mako Vunipola.. Makes sense to me.
