“Instead we have Havili – who until last season had never played 12”
Havili was always a 5/8 and started both his 1st class career and Crusaders career at 12. Like Jordie Barrett, 12 is his position from youth.
Havili was only pushed back to 15 to accommodate other players.
He has a wonderful kicking game as well – it should be allowed to be unleashed.

'No identity': What are the All Blacks trying to do?

I doubt he’ll give up the largest payday of his life. Either the NZR stump up the cash for terminating his contract or they pay him fortnightly and any “bonuses” his contract is due til the end of next year.
I’d expect the bonus schedule is stacked so he’ll get incrementally more by meeting higher standards but which holding onto the Bledisloe and Freedom Cups and RC (so 2 more wins this year) won’t mean nothing.
If he has any sense (I’m sure he does) then he should have a decent employment lawyer on call. NZR are going to love this.
If it wasn’t the fact that we are talking about the All Blacks, I’d be highly amused.

Yes the ref was very strict on entry through “the gate”. It was quite a surprise since all other refs since about 2018 have been rather lenient and some quite slack. He pinged Lomax once for it and that was marginal (I thought) but other than that seemed determined to be be accurate.

CHEIK MATE! 'Do it all the time' - coach fires back after Foster breakdown whinge as Pumas celebrate historic win

There wasn’t much wrong with the AB defence – it still had a completion rate over 90%. It just wasn’t 97% like Los Pumas (phenomenal number). Generally there is really no need for league defence coaches any longer in Union.

Now the inability of the defence to translate into turnovers is probably an issue.

And given that the overwhelming amount of possession and territory was in the AB’s favour (even after a bit of a come-back in the last 1/4 by Los Pumas), that should have translated to a close victory if played correctly – which includes taking the kicks available.

Did you not get that DaveJ was a neutral?

try=5, penalty=3. 3/5=0.6 or 60%.

From your P.o.V Harry, what do you make of Plum as a coach? I know he had some good seasons with Natal and a very good season with the Hurricanes as forwards coach (less so as head coach).
Has he got the chops ? If so what’s your take on why it seems to have gone pear-shape for him as AB assistant coach. Does he rub players up the wrong way ? Is he technically flaky?
The difference that Ryan has made in 2 weeks makes it seem odd that an even partially competent forwards’ coach couldn’t have done that in 3 years.

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

Indeed. From this side of Hansen’s tenure I can see how that might play. However I think one has to be rather too conspiratorial (if conspiratorial comes as a countable or divisible “amount” that is) to say that he was playing that game from pre-2015.

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

Yes but they aren’t threats – which is your original accusation. It isn’t anything like the flounce that Henry did on his way to Wales – the run-up to that did look and sound like a threat (not that it wasn’t, necessarily, warranted btw).

Neither Razor nor Deans can be accused of threatening the NZR. As soon as the word is spread by the media (who quite possibly are simply fishing) then there comes a time when they really have to set things straight. I think that both handled things OK under the circumstances.

The victory that surely condemned Ian Foster

Actually, to be fair, there were a couple of times Hansen did laud Foster’s work after a win.

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

There’s a number of places (including squidge) that are quite persuasive that the last ABvBok game was a plan from analytics and given that’s Schmidt’s wheelhouse, they drew the line from one to t’other.

Gregor Paul mentioned it (diffidently to be sure) on a podcast with a couple of Irish dudes – who were unsurprised.

Originally I attributed the better back play (at least some of it) to Foster as hands on coach. Now I’m less sure.

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

So lots of odes – to a muddy field where the pumas gambol ?

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

I don’t see Foster as any sinister villain – just a decent hands on backs coach that isn’t a particularly good head coach (or selector as it turns out)

I do see the NZR’s coach selection practice as being poor and those that promote it as being dodgy – perhaps even villains.

The Wrap: Where does Ian Foster rank on the list of rugby’s villains?

We don’t poach them. We hard bake them and put them in the stew.
Coming to Canterbury is the only way some of them will get ahead; better coaching. Most, these days, actively try to get the attention of the Cru’s coaches – it’s not as if the talent scouts have to try hard.
Beside the Cru’s area is a net producer of talent (including coaching talent) for other franchises.
You’re welcome.

A plea for justice for Ian Foster

SA 17-0 1928 at Kingsmead is the largest margin.

Foster SURVIVES as NZR hails 'magnificent' win over Springboks and declares it's 'a new dawn'

Deans was not arrogant. All applicants were told (and it was reported) that they wouldn’t necessarily get their choice of assistants and that they were to apply as individuals.
All of them did – except Henry. Who then profited by including his assistants. It was a clear tip-off to him and caught the others (which included Foster originally) on the hop.
Both Colin Cooper (who’d, also, applied in his own right – on his own like all others except the anointed) and Deans were then faced with negotiating a combined ticket. Actually a collegue of mine (at the time) was related to Cooper and was having dinner with him and family during this time when Deans rang to discuss matters.
IIRC Foster dropped out because he couldn’t make a “team”
In 2017 they used a slightly different form of subterfuge – namely, slipping the time out again and again til the real talent took the deals in front of them thus leaving only Razor as a challenge to the office boy.

Wayne Smith

The victory that surely condemned Ian Foster

Neither Robertson nor Deans threatened NZR- that’s just bosh.
Some coaches simply get offside with the hierarchy and never get a sniff. Others are suitably unctuous and slither right in. There’s nothing new about this – the NZRFU have played this game before.

The victory that surely condemned Ian Foster

I used to be on the Rugby Heaven site when it was in NZ – and then it got moved to Oz and the focus changed so I left. I was on a UK one for a while – there was a decent Southern Hem. board for a while but that eventually withered.
I’m really not interested in a Fanboi site – even if I can’t restrain my impulse to take the michael out of all non-Canterbury sides. I want to read decent arguments and explanations – which does break out here every now and then. And its not always about rugby – the arguments around the Folau incidents on this site were vigorous and quite textured and handled better (IMO) than any other media site I visited.

A plea for justice for Ian Foster

Indeed. Don’t know what to make of Schmidt’s inclusion – he’s very much the “my way or the highway” type and his attack with Ireland was very underwhelming. Whereas Foster has to be given some kudos for his attack under Hansen and for the Bok game on the weekend.

On the face of it Foster as HC and Schmidt as Attack Coach is the worst of both worlds.

Yes Livin is reasonably Easy here in Canterbury (the center of the universe). No DD or Gypsy queen though – can’t afford that again !

A plea for justice for Ian Foster

Listen Mate, Strange women lying in ponds delivering swords is no basis for an All Black coach !! Supreme All Black authority comes from excellence in coaching at relevant lower levels not from some farcical trophy voiding and chummy existence ! If I went around saying I was the Head Demeter of Darkness simply because of a plastic ball from Santa you’d rightly deride me.
NZRFU – will you shut up.
Now we see the micro aggressions inherent in the system. Help help I’m being mocked, disrespected and mentally harmed past what my salary is priced at.

Rugby News: 73% of fans still want Foster sacked as D-Day set, RA behind Rennie despite all-time rankings low

The original coach of the Cru was Vance Stewart not Wayne Stuart. He had the worst rota of any of the NZ teams by far.
Yet with a still poor rota they almost made the semis in the second year (under Smith)– and would have done if it wasn’t for 2 egregious reffing blunders.
I solidly dispute the issue of rota with the Chiefs – in my opinion they never had the worst in the country yet often played like they did. There was always an excuse – they sounded very much like what we’ve been hearing recently.
Worse than that the skill levels of certain players (e.g. Muliania’s kicking) never improved at the Chiefs yet you see averagely talented players over achieving due to meticulous skill development at the Cru – and at some other franchises as well.
Foster may be a nice guy and has some good attributes for a coaching team but something simply doesn’t smell right when he’s been the head honcho.
And the prevarication of the board when the coach was up for grabs ensured all the top and experienced talent had grabbed other jobs – not being able to risk the wait and not getting the AB job. If that isn’t a jack-up, what is? To slot in beside the jack-up of 2007.
I’ve worked for and with a number of people over the years who’ve empitomised the Peter principle. And I’m getting that same type of vibe here.

Rhinos is/was their league team.

The Thursday Two-up: Recalibrate, reset, or full steam ahead?

DDA didn’t get much change out of Havilli last week. Besides, will he even see the ball?

All Blacks team: Mo'unga to start, young prop in line for debut, Frizell named at No.6 over Ioane

If you’re going down that path then Jordie at 12 and Fa’inganuku at 13 might be a combo worth bedding in – but you need to play Fa’inganuku at 13 all the time.
