The persistent selection of David Warner, to give him a farewell series, defies all logic.

Mass confusion erupts over AFL 'abandoned match' rules after Easter Monday's bizarre lightning-enforced delay
Wrong. That’s before half time is reached only.

May have given us 10-20. May also have given us 0 or an injured bowler (particularly on the evidence of Hazlewood’s 2nd innings), almost certainly means we don’t get a wicket that evening. There’s a reason 36% of D/N Tests have featured ‘unusual’ declarations.
Every Aussie rated from second Test and series vs West Indies: Did Smith the opener get vindicated even in defeat?
You’d definitely have a case if it was Div 2. Renshaw’s runs have all been Div 1.
Picking apart the selectors’ choices in the Bailey era: Masterstrokes tarnished by blunders as Australia face future upheaval
On the 2017 tour, Renshaw averaged 75 balls per innings, second for Aus behind an immense Smith (127). Warner managed 39.

Not really. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 3 contenders are the next 3 in line.
Picking apart the selectors’ choices in the Bailey era: Masterstrokes tarnished by blunders as Australia face future upheaval
The fact that an in-form Head (who had never played Tests in India) copped horses-for-courses, and Renshaw (who had proven he could bat time in India) didn’t open, but Warner (who was a proven failure in India) was retained to open is one of the most peculiar calls I’ve seen. Also quite predictable in Warner’s case, though strange that the obsession with his aggression wasn’t replicated with Head.

Shield cricket matters, as does FC cricket in general. Hence why Renshaw got the nod.

ICC rankings, so extreme peaks rather than sustained excellence. Smith is 2nd all rime on that metric.
Farcical 'gut feel' twist to umps' bad light decision after play delay slammed, great's left-field Warner replacement call
Warner follows a century helped by erratic bowling with what should have been 28 runs in 4 innings if not for deplorable fielding. Colour me shocked.
Death, taxes and foul weather spoiling SCG Test: Umpires blasted over bad light call as Warner fails to fire for farewell
They don’t have to be unbiased, just do it away from a presenting gig. Impartiality is a key tenet of good journalism.
David Warner: the most complicated legacy in Australian cricket history
Warner – he of the ‘umpire stats should be displayed on screen’ after DRS confirmed his dismissal.
Tom Curran’s umpire act is worse than it appears - and the game cannot tolerate it
Critiscising Candice for sticking up for her husband as a TV panelist is not disgraceful. It’s a gig where bias shouldn’t come into it; you wither excuse yourself from the conversation or get off the show.
Claiming de Kock as the one who started it is as bad as blaming Sarwan for McGrath issuing a death threat. Classic we can give it but not take it areas.

Fine line between showing dissent to a decision and airing one’s personal frustrations. If a bail-tickling ball is enough to send you on your way, I think it’s human nature to be a bit upset. It’s not like Smith carries on directly with an umpire during or after the match, unlike one of his teammates.

Might be 60-80, but hopefully with an extra wicket in hand. It’s Test cricket; strike rate isn’t everything, and if the opener is inconsistent, all it does is expose the rest of the team to the new ball earlier.

The *white* mark on his arm was there from the start of the innings.

I’m not going to get the point, because it isn’t and hasn’t been a legal catch. Go and look at Dyson’s catch or Border’s classic slips catch (both pre-slomo) and tell me with a straight face that they weren’t avoiding grounding the held ball. If you want it to be a catch, take it up with the MCC.
'Complete control': Moises rejects fuss over 'embarrassing oversight', 'flat out wrong' BBL catch controversy
Once upon a time, there was no 3rd umpire, therefore lineball calls typically went with the batter. This is no different, it’s just that catches took longer to be reviewable. If this has ‘always been out’, I shouldn’t have been able to find 40 year old catches where players do everything possible to keep the held ball above the ground when grounding it would make it easier to catch, 15 year old examples where the subject was discussed in a Test match, or a 12 year old forum where the issue is argued at length. All things which validated my understanding of watching, playing and occasionally umpiring for 25 years.

Several not out examples before Starc. You can always take a look at some of those classic catches. Watch Dyson’s or Border’s. They did everything possible to keep the ball above the turf when grounding it would have made it easier to retain.

Neither would close run outs/stumpings. Besides, Starc and Henriques I called not out on first (real time) viewing, so there’s that.

The Starc/Henriques example is in the guidelines as far as what constitutes body control goes. I’m not aware of anything written for the Green/Smith examples, however that wording is used for all those catches.

Catches didn’t go upstairs in the Ponting match, so there’s that. Glad you agree that the law has always applied, it’s just now simpler to enforce.
'Complete control': Moises rejects fuss over 'embarrassing oversight', 'flat out wrong' BBL catch controversy
Green and Smith both had fingers underneath the ball, a well tested intepretation of a fair catch. They are not the same as Starc/Henriques.

Actually I can find an earlier example – see Ponting vs India at SCG 2008. Ponting might not have known the law but Indian media were all over it.
