Vince Rugari is an Adelaide-born journalist who cut his teeth on the sporting graveyard that is the Gold Coast. He fancies the round ball and the Sherrin, and used to be a handy leg-spin bowler before injury curtailed a baggy green push. He is a Port Adelaide fan by birth, as painful as that has been recently. He's now sports editor of The Area News in Griffith, NSW.

64′ – Sydney FC 2-2 Western Sydney Wanderers
Finally, the string of Sydney corners comes to an end… but they still pose a threat in open play. Good passages but WSW staunch in defence, and aren’t giving much away.

YELLOW CARD for Ognenovski! It comes just before Sydney’s third corner in a row, the big fella just causing carnage in the box and getting blokes angry. I love it. Now they get a FOURTH corner. This is a heap of pressure they’re piling on, they need something from it… but no, Covic tips it away, and it’s out for a throw. All Sydney these last five.

Sydney FC corner. Well delivered by Petkovic but can’t find a teammate, and they get a repeat attempt.

FREE KICK WSW coming up, and a YELLOW CARD to Bernie Ibini, who just clatters into the back of Vitor Saba. The Brazilian’s looking good, I like the way he just glides on the ball… he’s been decent tonight. This is in a good area for the Wanderers, just outside the box… but gee that’s ordinary, they may as well have just passed it to Janjetovic. As you were.

Santalab finds the back of the net on a Castelen through ball but it’s chalked off, he was offside. Good call.

This game has really opened up. Get comfortable. You can feel it’s about to explode.

YEP. 2-2. I think it’s Ognenovski…
Ball bouncing around after a corner, in dispute, and Ognenovski swings a foot at it… it deflects off Castelen and trickles over, harmlessly, to square things up, catching Covic out, who dives the other way… how about that. Game on.

How is it not level! The corners gave Sydney nothing directly but the ball hung around and they piled on the pressure. Wanderers blocked every attempt but… WHAT??? COVIC HAS DONE THEM A FAVOUR! MAYBE! 2-2!

The Sky Blues on the front foot and now they have a corner. Wonder if Covic can do them a Janjetovic-like favour?

HALF-TIME – 2-1, Western Sydney’s way.
It was all Wanderers after that Bridge opener and Janjetovic’s shocking own goal… and they were doing it easy. But that last-gasp goal from Gamiero makes things very, very interesting. It’s still very much game on at Allianz. And I reckon there’s a couple of goals left in it too.
What have you liked so far? For me, Saba and Castelen have been quality, and they need to be I guess for WSW to be any chance this season. Good to see them back with a bit of swagger ahead of the ACL final too. Sydney’s been disjointed and generally disappointing, but let’s see what changes after a Graham Arnold hairdryer monologue.

GOAL SYDNEY! GAMIERO! 2-1 NOW.
That’s just what the doctor ordered. An incisive run from Brosque, he backheels for Gamiero, who is in perfect position for a shot with his right… and he pulls it off. Two goals in two weeks, and that changes everything.

Razzle dazzle from Saba! Couple of stepovers, carves himself out a bit of space and he unleashes with the left from just outside the box – the shot’s dragged wide, but that’s a good glimpse of what the replacement Ono might be capable of.

Nothing working for Sydney at the moment. I think Arnie might blow a gasket at half-time.

The Sky Blues lacking quality in the final third. Ibini has been guilty of making the wrong decisions on the last couple of forays… Janko’s been anonymous, Brosque and Gamiero average too.

Sydney FC were flying on the break just then but an intercept killed what looked like a pretty good counter-attack opportunity opening up. They’re going hell for leather now – a goal before the break is vital.

Decent stat flying around – WSW have won all 15 games in which they have led 2-0. So there you go.

Not sure what’s going on here. A drop ball? Anyway… yellow card coming now. Brendan Santalab pretty much just runs into Ognenovski, and sees a slice of Edam for his troubles. Fair enough too.

Instead of shooting, Petkovic loops a ball in… it’s dealt with, and in any case the Wanderers win a free kick of their own. Ho-hum.

Half-hour gone and it’s all on Sydney to wrestle back into contention… and here’s a good chance, with NTS conceding a free-kick right within Petkovic range.

Sydney haven’t had a quality goalkeeper since Clint Bolton in my mind… terrible way to surrender a 2-0 lead. Sydney now will be flat out getting back into this one. It’s all Wanderers.

24′ GOAL… DISASTER FOR SYDNEY. 2-0. OWN GOAL.
Horrible. Ognenovksi tried to clear that corner, but he hoofed it right up in the air… it lands in the goalmouth, and Vedran Janjetovic palms it over into his own goal. That is terrible goalkeeping. He had to tip that over!

YELLOW CARD – Seb Ryall clatters into Iacopo La Rocca, and he’s shown the cheddar. Free kick now for the Wanderers from the left… nothing doing, but now a corner to come.

AHAHAHA.. Janjetovic tries to help Hamill with a bit of cramp but Ognenovski comes in and tells him to stop helping the opponent! Sensational stuff. This game still poised on a knife’s edge, several players on a yellow testing the ref’s patience… it’s all happening out there.
