Totally agree. Unproven in the NRL which is a different beast to SOO coaching. Just ask Mal Meninga. If I were running the Gold Coast, I’d go for the Walker bros. Even the very best coaches have 5 yrs between wins so regular or instant success is not guaranteed, especially with a club currently in GC’s state. Walker bros would give them a flair that might appeal to their fans and get bums back on seats. At least keep them interested and perhaps excited about their team during the rebuild. What would be interesting with Walters is whether he and the GC players could go all year without mentioning the other 15 teams as he instructed his players to do when playing that other mob in SOO.
Seriously, why would the Gold Coast Titans want Kevin Walters as coach?
We need a tough coach. Someone to put some steel into this mob. Can we please start a campaign to get Toovey to the club. Tough, passionate and successful.
The poisoned chalice: Coaching the Dragons
Mac Gregor has finally dropped the ball completely. Here he is telling everyone the Dragons can win the comp and he leaves out Ben Hunt for a vital clash. Not sure what is wrong with Ben (paid $1 million a year) but if it is to legitimately rest him, Mac Gregor must go.
NRL Round 18 teams: Graham returns for Dragons, Roosters and Knights bulk up for blockbuster
Yes!!
Has always been a great ambassador for the game and has inspired so many younger players.
Very difficult to win premierships as so much depends on those around u as well. But he has won one including a memorable moment in the GF. Also 1 premiership more than Hindmarsh who I believe is in the HOF (as he should be).
His time at the Dragons, while not his best ever football, the effort he put in and the way he conducted himself exemplary.
Glad he wore the Big Red V.
Should Benji Marshall make the NRL Hall of Fame?
Besides your last sentence not making any sense, the side he started with in 88 WAS full of Australian reps (Lewis, Miles, Scott, Langer, Dowling, Cornescu, Niebling), just like every other side he has coached. Buy yourself a history book chump!
Super coach or anything but?
Bennett is a great coach of top-notch teams. Every side that he has been successful with has been star studded upon his arrival. The Broncos teams of the 90’s were almost an Australian side; same with the 00’s. Perhaps a big tick for Bennett comes in his development of Lockyer and overseeing his transition from a full back to a 5/8. The Dragons team was built by Brown and I think had he not slapped Barrett, Thompson, etc he would have continued and won a comp. We did not need Bennett to win a comp; he just happened to be steering the ship at the time. Bennett also needed to add a couple of proven winners like Jeremy Smith, Costigan, Fien, Gasnier (back from Rugby half way thru the year). It was no miracle the win in 2010 and as much as I hate to point this out, we also won it when Melbourne were out of the picture (salary cap) and we could never beat them. Bennett’s strength is he knows how to keep a team of superstars and generally, modern players happy. This is important and another huge tick for him. And he is, as a result of his record, one of the all time greats. But he has never left a club in good shape. Rather, he leaves them (deliberately to enhance his reputation?) in a mess. So I agree with the article – not a super coach but a manager of rep teams – a reliable, competent babysitter.
I believe Bellamy is the “super” coach. He has created a super club. He has instituted practices and a culture that will endure well after he has left. He oversaw the rise of the Big 4 and the number of “average” (a rating given to them before joining the storm) players that he has brought the very best out of is phenomenal. Perhaps Trent Robinson will one day reach that status too. But in my 46 years of watching league I would rate the top 5 as: 1. Bellamy 2. Jack Gibson 3. Tim Sheens 4. Wayne Bennett 5. Robinson
Two “super” coaches at the top
Super coach or anything but?
They would be better off dropping Boyd and playing with 12 men. At least you won’t mistakenly assume that the player with your jersey on that is holding a space in the defensive line will in fact try to tackle the opponent running at him. And he won’t just catch and pass in attack.
Desperate times for Broncos with finals fast approaching
Love it!!!
As you said, too much rubbish stats.
Run harder than your opposition, tackle harder and most importantly, finish in front on the score board.
The only stat that really matters is ladder position.
Great read
The only stat that matters for the Broncos
Does this whole Nathan Cleary talk sound a lot like Mitchell Pearce revisited? Only difference is Cleary was fortunate to come into a stronger NSW team and one playing QLD without the big 3 or 4 or whatever it is. And let’s face it, it was literally a team that Pearce could win with too. Like Pearce, Cleary Is a very good first grader but no superstar. He has matured early (like Pearce) but he will have his limitations like Pearce. IMO he will never rise to the level of Cronk or Thurston yet the talk in many areas places him on that trajectory. Of course I could be wrong and am happy for that to be the case but history has that uncanny knack of repeating itself.
Do Penrith have a potential problem?
