I set-up The Roar with my brother, Zolton, originally as a place to house the writing of our father, Spiro.
Setting the tone, the first words written on The Roar were: Willie Mason is a fool who gives stupidity a bad name.
The Roar has grown a lot since those days.
We now reach well over a million Australians each month and we’ve formed a business around it and our other sites.
The Roar has grown fundamentally because of our amazing community of Roarers who contribute so much each day.
But we’ve also grown because of the talented people who work behind the scenes. These are guys many of you might not know but are the real wood behind the arrow when it comes to operations. Tristan, originally, who didn’t get the praise Paddy did when he left but should have. Ryman. Jeffers and Conks. Joe Frost, Dan Wighton. Janek. Riords. Vinny. Scotty. Connor. Josh Elliot. So many others.
Then we can go wider and look at the nearly 60 writers, hundreds of live bloggers and video producers.
Of all the many people who have contributed so much over the years, Paddy’s led the way.
Thank you Pad.
The Roar says a fond farewell to Managing Editor, Patrick Effeney
Conks – you won the original Roar of the Crowd writer’s competition with this piece in 2008; now for more guys to open their careers with The Roar.

kingplaymaker – thank you for your wonderful contributions to The Roar. You’re a true Roarer.
I take it we’ve sent you a Roar cap by now? If not, please contact Paddy by the usual means.
I’m not sure the Chiefs will drop another game in 2016
Good fun! Who’d have thought rugby and opera would mix so nicely at 5am.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over England
Poise is a good phrase Paddy.
My only concern was the intensity drop-off mid-second half by the Wallabies. They seems to sit on their heels rather than spring forward in a quest for more points.
But it’s a minor concern. The battle was intense and they played wonderfully.
Great rugby in what has been a gripping RWC15.
Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over England
Allanthus – I quite enjoy watching squash but mainly because I love playing the game.
What must win out ultimately in terms of its success as a sport is it’s a wonderful game to play – 3D chess I think they say. It’s certainly growing hugely in USA.
What we’re missing in Australia is energy. Aaron provides this via his East Coast Squash Academy (which I attend). Who else is driving the game forward? What are NSW and Australia squash doing to make a real change to the game?
The big issues facing squash in Australia: Q&A with Aaron Frankcomb
Roarers – this is our very first long-read and I’m super proud of what we’ve been able to build and offer Roarers.
Hope you all enjoy it. Well done to The Roar team and Spiro for crafting it.
SPECIAL SPIRO: How the Webb Ellis Cup was won in a land that rumbles
Roarers can be assured I chucked everything at Scott to stay. But it was never about the money for Scott and my attempts to persuade him to stay were never going to work.
We will stay in touch and do what we can and hopefully…just hopefully we may once again see him back Roaring.
FAREWELL ROAR: Bickering a symptom of troubled times
Scott,
As the co-founder of The Roar I want to publicly express my sincere gratitude for your contributions on The Roar.
Time and time again, I’ve heard that Scott is our best rugby analyst on the site. You have added a huge amount of value – we thank you and will miss your deep insights Scott.
Cheers, Zac
FAREWELL ROAR: Bickering a symptom of troubled times
Personally very proud of your success Elisha – such a wonderful Roarer. Well done.

The Ashes are as good as won
Christo – we put the HA! icon on there for the single reason to encourage more humour writing on the site. The thinking being people will get a sense we embrace sports humour on the site.
I love Ben’s writing and this piece worked for me, but the nature of satire is it polarises people.
We’d love to run more humour on The Roar, so send us any links to writers who you think will fit the bill.

Titus, we only moderate according to our policy, which is all about respectful informed sports debate.
The alternative is an unmoderated site and I reckon that’s worse.
Please contact us to discuss site issues or unfair moderation.

EXCLUSIVE: Ljubo Milicevic opens up about Perth, football and life
Very happy to have this piece on The Roar. Great stuff!
Chris Rogers talks exclusively to The Roar
Thanks for your words Glenn, Ryan and other Roarers.
With The Roar we’ve created something special. I say ‘we’ because The Roar is fundamentally created by Roarers who make it what it is. Tristan and the team at Conversant provide nudges here and there, but it’s what Roarers bring to the platform that really makes the site.
And it’s working.
To give you guys some insight, we recently hit a high of one million unique browsers for a rolling month. We’ve published 1.3 million comments and each month publish around 700 fan articles. (It makes for a lot of editing!)
Every three days, the equivalent of War and Peace – the longest book in the English language – is written on the site by Roarers. Not all of those words are code-wars either!
As we shift increasingly to video, we have Glenn and Scott producing regular video shows. And Geoff Lemon just wrapped two outstanding video series: One on the Ashes (with BA) http://www.theroar.com.au/geoff-lemons-ashes-tour-diary/, and the other with Foxtel looking at the EPL (http://www.theroar.com.au/football/epl/). If you haven’t watched them yet, I do recommend you do.
We’ve got a great path ahead of us as the site continues to grow in authority and reach in the Australian sports landscape.
Keep Roaring.
Why you’ve got to love The Roar
I played cricket with Sam’s father and knew Sam as a young lad hanging around the cricket club. You could not want for a finer person or family and I think it’s great he’s crafted a successful career for himself in the game.
But I agree it should be CA’s goal to try to entice Sam back. What decision he makes is entirely up to him – but we should at least try.
Sam Robson must play for Aussies next Ashes
Roarers – big shout out to Paul Barkley from LookPro photography(http://www.lookpro.com.au/), who’s proving these amazing images from the match.

HG Nelson: 'The Lions play best when they don't have the ball...'
Fair comment Parisien, but the mention of Samsung wasn’t part of an advertising deal. When we bring advertising into the site, we do in more transparent ways.
SPIRO'S Lions Diary: Brumbies show Wallabies how to do it
Hahaha – nice one Darwin! That had me chuckling…
In truth, we both purchased Samsungs the other weekend because they’re great sets. It’s also nice to support our advertisers, who pay our columnists and keep this site alive and growing.
cheers,
Zac

As co-founder and CEO of The Roar I want to acknowledge we made a mistake with this column I share in the apology to Bill Pulver and Rob Clarke.
We’ve listened to the various comments and we’ll learn from the experience as we continue to build a great Australian sports opinion website.
