South Australia has undoubtedly been hard done by. Starting a test on a Wednesday is awful. Truly awful. There’s a justified complaint there. And for S.A. to host the Windies twice in two years is rough.

The article slips from a state’s perspective to a country’s perspective. Sure, Australia should do what it can to help struggling cricketing nations, but are NSW and Victoria excluded from that mantra? No, apparently, Australia should do their bit so suck it up South Australia.

The full forward line is a beauty.

The AFL all-time great alphabet teams: Letter B

Wow! What a team! Wayne Carey centre-half forward, John Coleman full-forward and Gordon Coventry as the third tall. Extraordinary.
But here are my gripes, because that it was you do to these lists.
Omitting Cousins doesn’t make football sense. He was a better player than Crawford and I’d pick him ahead of Cotchin. Even if you wanted to put him on a half-forward flank, it would be better than leaving him out (he started his career there). He, along with Glen Jakovich, is West Coast’s greatest player. I have to assume you were implementing a Justin Langer-esque “Good blokes policy” when picking the team.
Also, you just had to find space for Syd Coventry. I mean, who else is better qualified to captain a group of champions. None of your other back-pockets or half-back flankers scream out “pick-me” ahead of Coventry.
Still, awesome list. Looking forward to more 🙂

So sad to leave one on the sidelines. Lillee our greatest fast bowler and Alderman who reserved his best for the old enemy.
But since Alderman was so good in England, I’d give him the nod. It’s only in an Ashes series he could be considered better than Lillee.

I cringed.

The ten most cringe-worthy moments in Australian sport

I was thinking of picking an Australian XI, every player from a different decade.
But this team is basically what the result would be.

All-time Australian Test XI

No Spofforth – no Ashes. He’s in for mine as “greatness” is about more than just stats – it’s also about legacy.
And that mo!!

I’d put in O’Reilly for McGrath.

All-time Australian Test XI

I second this.
Actually, I’d be happy to drop McGrath for O’Reilly.

All-time Australian Test XI

I nominate Voges for the home XI 😉

I like this JGK. Take on the best.

With Border and Waugh, you’ll fight tooth and nail as you go down.
But you will go down. Your facing Bradman.

All-time Australian Test XI

Nice. I’m with you.
The only person AB should lose out to is Bradman.

Mind you, the only people Smith should lose out to are Bradman and Border.

Pick The Roar's greatest Ashes XI of all time: Steve Smith vs Allan Border

This is hard (unlike the last one).
I had both in my team overall, but I’d pick Border. He offers a few more intangibles – better bowling, left-handedness and better captaincy.
Smith stiff.

Agreed. I picked Hutton in my greatest Ashes team and then agonised over Hobbs or Sutcliffe. It’s interesting too, as I rate both so highly and would put both in my “best team of all time”. But for the Ashes team, I eventually picked Hobbs over Sutcliffe.
And then I felt bad. But that was going to happen either way.

Pick The Roar's greatest Ashes XI of all time: Jack Hobbs vs Herbert Sutcliffe

Yeah, Hayden wasn’t even considered for my openers. Hutton for sure.

CA behaved badly. This may explain the cheating, but it doesn’t excuse the cheating.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

Let the punishment stand. Given Warner and Smith led a promising young Aussie astray, I’m very happy for them to be out of the country when our promising young Aussies are showing their wares.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

“if…the ban was wrong to start off with…then you vary it”. Sure. But it wasn’t wrong. So don’t vary it.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

Spot on Neil. If Peever has done wrong it makes much more sense for his punishment to be increased as opposed to the punishments of Smith, Warner and Bancroft to be decreased. I’m sure hoping that many of these other commentators aren’t judges in a court of law.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

Thank you Josh for making sense. You have made a completely coherent argument and I wholeheartedly agree. What those cheaters did was a disgrace and the punishment was fit – I would have given a much harsher ban personally.
There are two points you make well Josh to counter much of the arguing that goes on from Roarers and experts alike. Point 1 – Smith, Warner and Bancroft are still responsible for their actions even if CA is “toxic”. These cricketers indisputably brought the game into disrepute and thus these cricketers deserve the ban. Point 2 – Smith Warner and Bancroft are Australian and Australians take cheating extremely seriously, even if the ICC and other nations don’t. Stop comparing this lot to others. Other sentences may have been light, that doesn’t mean they were right.

We shouldn’t see Smith or Warner back this summer

Dawson Simpson is incredible in his ability to play his role. If he plays 20+ games, GWS will make the grand final.

The real MVP: Dawson Simpson

Nothing like a provocative article! However, let’s reflect on history, not just a very good year and intriguing off-season for Collingwood. Dean Cox practically invented the midfield-ruckman role that Brodie Grundy performs. And Cox did it at an elite level for ten years, Grundy has only just won his first AA. Dean Cox, Chris Judd, Daniel Kerr and Ben Cousins are clearly ahead of whatever four Pie mids you deem best. Plus Chad Fletcher, Michael Braun and Rowan Jones made for very handy fourth-string midfielders. Collingwood needs to find another gear to rival, let alone surpass, that mighty eagles outfit.

Why Collingwood’s midfield is now the best ever

David, you asked “If the ICC cannot bring itself to hand down 12-month suspensions, why should Cricket Australia do so?” Let me answer your question with another question: “Given the ICC are sissies and too scared to stand up for what is fair, what is the most reasonable response for Australia given the disgraceful actions of the cheaters?” The bans are necessary because they send an oft-ignored message – cheating is a disgrace. The fact they are still suspended serves as a great reminder for every cricketer and indeed every sportsman.

Time for Cricket Australia to end the Smith, Warner and Bancroft bans

Well written Ryan. I agree, it has been so long a gap in the NBA, you can’t help but look at what has happened and ponder it incessantly. I can’t believe how strong the West is. Phoenix, Dallas and Sacramento are actually playing to win (and have already won games). So I agree with you wholeheartedly about OKC’s potential peril (though it is only 1 week)
