Yes, we’ve created a platform where opinions are shared freely and the voice of the everyday punter is as loud as that of our Expert writers. This is what we intended for on The Roar and hopefully our readers enjoy that opportunity. But it’s equally important to own up and acknowledge when you get it wrong.

These are all fair points. However, it should also be acknowledged that good investigative journalism relies on sources to provide information that the public wouldn’t otherwise be privy to seeing. This has been the hallmark of effective reporting since the beginning of time and I think many would agree that over the years Spiro has contributed numerous well-researched columns based on information supplied by his sources. In this instance, Spiro acted in good faith under the assumption that his source was accurate in what he was claiming. The correspondence he had to support that was well documented. Unfortunately, it turns out that this assumption was misplaced, and as a result, Spiro has conceded that he clearly got it wrong.

Hi Roarers, this is the second in a short series outlining how our expert football columnists would fix Australian football. We hope it will generate positive discussion about the game in this country.
Tomorrow, Vince Rugari will focus on the Socceroos as they push to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, to be followed with Tony Tannous on Thursday, who will look at youth development, and Davidde Corran on Friday, who will offer insight into ways to continue to boost fan engagement across football in Australia.

The voting mechanism is, though, a vital way for us to be notified of comments that aren’t deemed appropriate or aren’t adding much to the debate/discussion. As Brett rightly pointed out, we have our hands full keeping an eye on all the comments going through the site, but as long as you’re contributing in a meaningful manner, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Thank you everyone for your comments on this retraction/apology from Spiro. It was a good opportunity to vent your opinion on a range of interesting offshoots (the use of sources in journalism, politics in Australian rugby etc), and your feedback to Spiro has been noted. He made a mistake, and we put our hand up as having got it wrong by running the column. We’ll leave this comment thread open for another 30 minutes, at which point we’ll switch it off as everything that needs to be said has been said. It’s time to move onto other topics of debate now.
