Show Preview
Andrew Bogut will begin life as an official Sydney Kings player when they host the Adelaide 36ers during Round 1 of the NBL season. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:50pm (AEST).
This is one of the most highly-anticipated days in the history of Australia’s domestic basketball competition.
A former number one NBA draft pick, Bogut is widely regarded as one of, if not the best Australian to ever step on a court. His signing for the Kings was a major coup for the rebuilding league.
While Bogut is going to be the prized attraction for the Kings and should draw possibly the league’s biggest crowd in history for the opener, the Sydney roster is dripping with talent wherever you look.
They have two former MVP’s leading the guard rotation in Jerome Randle and Kevin Lisch, while Olympian Brad Newley will lock down at the three. With import David Wear likely to round out the starting five and Daniel Kickert set to be the sixth man, the roster is possibly the most talented group ever seen in the NBL.
But they have plenty to prove. The Kings had one of the better rosters last year, only to finish seventh with Andrew Gaze under all sorts of pressure as coach to produce a run this season after two poor showings in a row.
The 36ers are last year’s grand finalists though and will be out to cause the upset on the road to kick-start their season.
The loss of Mitch Creek is a bad one for the club though, with the star forward heading off to the NBA during the off-season. While his career goes from strength to strength, Adelaide proved they would still be a force to be reckoned with after pushing Perth all the way during their opening game on Thursday.
Jacob Wiley looks the important figure to replace Creek, while fellow imports Ramone Moore and Adris De Leon will need to be strong.
The man who has the potential to flip the script though is Nathan Sobey. He has was up and down last season, but the Australian Boomer has the potential to be one of the league’s best players.
Prediction
The Kings should be way too strong in front of a huge home crowd, winning their opening match of the NBL season with Bogut dominating the paint.
Kings by 12.
