The Australian Boomers get their official World Cup preparations underway on Friday night as they take on an understrength Canada in the first of two games. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

The Boomers come into this series as the red-hot favourites. While they have had some drop outs from their squad, most notably that of Ben Simmons, they still possess a mountain of NBA talent.

Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Ingles, Jonah Bolden and Aron Baynes are likely to form the starting group, with the experience of Andrew Bogut then to lead the bench rotation group.

Outside of an also weakened USA, and backed up by some great NBL-shooting talent off the bench, with names like the NBA-experienced Mitch Creek, Chris Goulding and Cameron Gliddon backing up the starting group, Australia should be in a position to at the very least, medal when the World Cup rolls around.

On paper, these matches against Canada aren’t really going to be a fair contest. Injury to Kelly Olynyk is the latest blow to Canada in a long line of NBA players dropping out.

It leaves them with just a handful of players who are part of NBA teams, with big men Khem Birch and Chris Boucher needing to lead the charge for the nation.

Cory Joseph is likely to start at the one, with the guard averaging 25 minutes per game and playing all 82 for the Indiana Pacers last season.

The Canadians otherwise have a large amount of talent plying their trade in Canada, with guard Kevon Pangos the one to watch out for after he was named to the All Euro League second team in 2018.

Interestingly, these two sides will play in the group stage of the World Cup, so if nothing else, these two matches in Perth could give us an idea about how they are going to play out.

Prediction
Canada haven’t been in the country all that long and will still be adjusting. While there is no doubt the European talent brings an interesting dynamic to their squad, nothing less than a medal at the World Cup will be good enough for the Boomers, and that charge needs to start tonight with a strong showing.
