Australia and France might both be already through to the quarter-finals of the Basketball World Cup, but there is still plenty on the line in their final second-round match at the tournament. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10pm (AEST).

Both of these teams are yet to be defeated at the tournament across the first and second round, and as such, are guaranteed of a spot in the final eight.

However, the winner of tonight’s vital contest will make their run that much more simple.

While every team in the knockout rounds will be able to beat each other, there is no question that the two teams everyone wants to avoid are the USA and Serbia.

They are both slated to be in the top half of the draw, with a quarter-final against the world number one standing in the way barring any shock results, while the winner of this contest goes into the bottom half of the draw to play likely the winner of Greece and the Czech Republic, followed by a semi-final against either Spain or Poland.

So it goes without saying that chances of a medal may hinge on this game alone as the tournament starts to get very serious.

And while Australia have made teams like the Dominican Republic and Senegal look good, while they barely survived against Lithuania, this game against France is undoubtedly going to be their toughest yet.

While the French side have moved on from the glory days of Tony Parker running the point, they still have an incredibly strong line-up, highlighted in a tight win over Lithuania on Saturday.

While they don’t have Parker, they do have the strong combination of Evan Fournier and Axel Toupane, while Rudy Gobert and Nicolas Batum will give Andrew Bogut and Aron Baynes all sorts of problems.

And while the French guards are dangeous without a shadow of a doubt, their biggest task will be shutting down Australian guards Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova.

Mills with his shooting, and Dellavedova his passing games, have gotten Australia through the tournament so far, while the work of Joe Ingles has also been exceptional.

They shape as the three key players if Australia are to come away with victory and avoid the far tougher path to the final.

Prediction
Australia have been solid, if not fantastic. If they can contain Gobert, the match-up suits them.

Australia by 5.
