The second leg of Basketball World Cup qualifying gets underway in Doha as the Australian Boomers look to strengthen their position against Qatar. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEST).

This will be the first time the Boomers have taken to the court since their infamous incident in the Philippines, but they will be looking to put that to the back of their mind and focus on beating Qatar.

Because points have been carried over out of the first leg of qualifying, the Boomers come into the final six matches of the campaign with a distinct advantage.

They won five of their first six games, including the melee in Manila, meaning they sit top of Group F.

Their next six games will come home-and-away against Qatar, Kazakhstan and Iran, while Qatar will play the teams out of Australia’s group who made it through – the Philippines and Japan alongside the Boomers.

Qatar come into this with just two wins from their six games, meaning they are the bottom of the group and to get into the top four and be in with a chance of qualification, they will need everything to go right.

On the back of the fight, Australia will be without Daniel Kickert and Chris Goulding for the match, while NBA stars Thon Maker and Matthew Dellavedova won’t take to the court either.

Interestingly, Andrew Bogut, who has stated he wants to play in the World Cup and Olympics won’t play either, despite some promising results in the pre-season for the Sydney Kings ahead of his first season in the NBL.

Australia will instead be led by Kevin Lisch, who should have a field day alongside sharp-shooters Jason Cadee and Nathan Sobey during the fourth quarter when Qatar fatigue.

Where the battle will be won for the Boomers though is in the paint, with Daniel Johnson and Matt Hodgson playing alongside Angus Brandt. The game will be physical and if they can win the battle down low, the Boomers will cruise to the win.

On the other side of the coin, Qatar will need to win that same battle. Suliman Abdi Khalid and Mohd Yousuf Mohmmed will be the keys, with the pair leading the nation on both points and rebounds per game. Essentially, they will struggle for creativity and outside shooting, which a side needs in their repertoire to beat the Aussies.

Prediction
Travelling to the Middle East is never an easy thing to do. Australia have a large talent and creativity advantage though and while it’ll be physical, the Boomers should escape with the win.

Australia by 8 points.
