Cameron White a millionaire captain

He became an Australian cricket captain one day, a millionaire the next. Fair to say, Cameron White is still pinching himself.

“It has been a big couple of days,” White told AAP.

The 27-year-old on Friday was installed as Australia’s Twenty20 captain, replacing Michael Clarke who quit the short format of the game.

Within the next 24 hours, White sold for $US1.1 million to Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Deccan Chargers.

“Obviously it sits pretty well,” White said of his new IPL contract.

“Like the last couple of days, it probably hasn’t sunk in.

“It’s obviously a nice thing to happen, the last couple of days, so yeah, what can you say?”.

White’s ascension vindicates the late David Hookes, who handed the big hitting batsman Victoria’s captaincy at age 20 – the youngest skipper in the state’s history.

The boy from the small city of Bairnsdale in Victoria’s Gippsland region has retained his laid back country persona, according to his teammates.

Veteran Bushranger David Hussey, who himself earnt a whopping $US1.4m IPL contract with the Kings XI Punjab, rates White a sterling leader.

“He oozes lots of self-confidence and I think that helps his cricket brain as well,” said Hussey, also a member of Australia T20 squad for two matches against England in Adelaide on Wednesday and Melbourne on Friday.

“He’s been around for a long time and I think he’ll do remarkably well in the T20 format and hopefully further down the track higher honours as well.

“He’s got a very very good cricket brain, he does think very swiftly and he likes to lead from the front and do the business himself and watch others follow.”

Fellow Victorian James Pattinson will join White and Hussey when Australia’s T20 squad assembles in Adelaide on Monday to prepare for the English.

The 20-year-old quick bowler, who won a national cap after just seven domestic T20 games, said the presence of White would allow him to settle better into the Australian camp.

“He obviously knows what he’s talking about and he’s good for the young blokes as well,” Pattinson said.

“He lets me bring my own plans to the game and he sort of works that really well.

“He’s very laid back and backs you as well.”
