I am struggling to remember a time when the EPL app on my iPhone notified me of a Manchester United line-up that didn’t make me roll my eyes and flood me with that little bit of anxiety as I prepare for what should be my favourite part of the week.

I wasn’t over the moon to see Fred and Andreas Pereira once again grace United’s midfield. With Paul Pogba out, what other choice is to be had? Two midfielders who struggle to maintain possession and seem quick to panic with misplaced passes and an iron first touch.

Daniel James once again broadcast that he is little worthy of the EFL lacking any confidence to take on defenders and create a single opportunity of his own.

Marcus Rashford was asleep and Anthony Martial didn’t get the opportunity to do much going forward with lack of a better option but still managed to disappoint by not displaying any real fire.

What enraged me the most without a question was Ashley Young. The fact that this man is paid big money to butcher the team I love baffles me.

Young is a sell-at-all-costs player and is nothing but toxic to the United squad. He struggles to keep up with mid-league attacks and loses possession for fun.

Not to mention how heart-wrenching it is to see his back hunched over as he attempts to summon his inner Ronaldo with unconvincing cross overs which inevitably lead to an incomplete cross – a staple of his time in Manchester.

I’ve been a United fan since I was a kid and I can’t watch this happen much longer. As soon as Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams were brought in the game turned on its head, they were revitalised.

I struggle to understand the selection process that OGS employs which consists regularly of overrated rejects with no shine. Use your youth early? Where was Angel Gomes? Why isn’t Greenwood gifted with a start?

What I do know is by the 70th minute I couldn’t wait for City to kick off in the match that followed.

Manchester United are in serious trouble right now and not much can change even this early in the season. They need a new manager, at least four new stars, the sale if not release of the poison which resides in the squad and a complete off-season to turn this thing around and come into next season with a shot of making the top six.

For myself, United and its fans – let’s hope I’m wrong.
