David De Gea’s continuous blunders and clangers this season have set United back.

The world-class goalie – long thought of as the best in the Premier League – hasn’t been the same since the 2018 world cup where he underperformed for Spain. He makes fewer saves, concedes many errors and ships goals in.

The goalkeeper has lost his confidence and he his not in the form he once was. De Gea concedes really cheap goals and makes fewer saves compared to the amount of shots he face.

The former imperious United number one has had an error-strewn season. It has been a harsh fall for the Spaniard.

He won Manchester United’s best player for four consecutive years and became the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world, taking home a staggering £375,000 per week in a bumper four-year deal.

However, at this point he can’t even save a close range flick. Some weeks ago Manchester United great Roy Keane criticised De Gea for the goal he conceded against Tottenham Hotspur.

He insisted “De Gea was the most overrated player he had ever seen”.

David De Gea’s dip in form has seen him save just 91 shots this season in the Premier League, compared to 122 in the previous campaign and 115 in the 2017-2018 season. In that season, he won the golden glove for most clean sheets having kept eighteen for himself.

His recent errors in the Fa Cup semi final to Chelsea could be the last straw to take by many Manchester United fans especially after the emergence of Dean Henderson.

The young goalie has earned lot of plaudits to be a united number one in time to come but maybe it could be sooner than expected. He has a better save percentage to De Gea, has conceded fewer of goals at a better ratio and has more clean sheets than De Gea.

David De Gea needs to find his gloves back to stay in between the sticks at United – or his reign could be over.
