There was a new contract for Pep Guardiola but it was the same old story for his Machester City side, going down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.

But in the Tottenham dugout Jose Mourinho was celebrating a landmark of his own in grand fashion with a sumptuous victory to take his side to the top of the table before the Liverpool and Leicester City clash.

Mourinho’s tactical class shows the Portuguese still possesses his magical touch. It’s no wonder the ‘Special One’ tag has stuck to him.

Manchester City had most of the ball during the game, which is standard for this City side, but they couldn’t edge past the resilient and solid Spurs defence, who were tactically solid and executed their plans to perfection despite losing Toby Alderweireld in the process.

Guardiola will have to go back to the drawing board to get his struggling City side back up. Key will be getting back the firepower they have had in recent years to help them bounce back.

This is the worst start to a league campaign in his career, with City sitting 13th on the table and eight points off top spot.

Tottenham is buzzing with joy for the signs and promises this team is showing. Tottenham have conceded just one defeat so far this season, coming early in the season against Everton. They have had a couple of unlucky days as well – the late penalty conceded by Eric Dier against Newcastle United and that late thunderbolt strike by Manuel Lanzini denied Spurs all three points in a thrilling encounter against Westham United – but survived for two draws from winning positions.

In nine games Jose Mourinho’s side has defeated both Manchester teams and conceded just one goal against both teams.

It’s time everyone starts to consider Tottenham for the big prize. A big statement has been made, and this team is worth paying attention to more than ever before.

Tottenham have shown they are capable of mounting a strong challenge and becoming champions. They possess quality players to help achieve those ambitions, including Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Gareth Bale, to name but a few, and with the calibre of manager in Jose Mourinho, a renowned winner, they’re a team to keep an eye on.
