Former WBO world welterweight champ Jeff Horn takes on rising star Tim Tszyu in an Australian boxing blockbuster over ten rounds tonight in Townsville. Join The Roar from 8.30pm (AEST) for fight coverage and debate in our live blog.
The 32-year-old Horn’s life changed forever when he upset Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium just over three years ago to win his world title. He successfully defended his belt against Englishman Gary Corcoran before being stopped by slick American Terence Crawford nearly a year later in Las Vegas.
A first-round KO over veteran Anthony Mundine followed for Horn after he stepped up in weight. Victoria’s Michael Zerafa (27-4) then upset him with a ninth-round TKO in Bendigo nearly a year ago tonight.
Horn was just about down and out in his rematch with Zerafa in December last year before staging a miraculous comeback which was kickstarted in the bloody ninth.
His unbeaten 25-year old opponent tonight is Tim Tszyu, the son of legendary former world super lightweight champion Kostya (34-2). Tim has been steadily building an impressive record of his own with 11 KOs from 15 fights, but Horn is easily his biggest challenge so far.
Somewhat surprisingly given Horn’s achievements in the ring, Tszyu will start a heavy favourite tonight. He will have a ten-centimetre reach advantage over Horn, so if he can find his range early he could cause some damage. Horn tends to cut easily.
Horn is likely to try and bustle Tszyu with his awkward style and punching power.
This one really could go either way.
There’s no doubting Horn’s toughness and experience, but he’s been in a few wars ever since he fought Pacquiao. Does he still have the hunger to dig deep again?
There’s also no question about Tim Tszyu’s pedigree, but is he ready to take Horn down?
