Defending champions the Adelaide Strikers host the table-topping Hobart Hurricanes in the 37th game of the Big Bash League this season. This match will be played at the Adelaide Oval and will begin at 7:15pm AEDT. You can follow it live with The Roar below.
It’s been a season to remember for the Hurricanes so far. Since beating the Brisbane Heat in a well-fought and reasonably close first game of the tournament, the Hurricanes have gone from strength to strength and registered six more victories, and in the process lost just once.
If one looks at a tournament like the IPL in which teams play 14 games during the league stage of the competition as well, teams winning eight games during that phase usually qualify for the knockouts/playoffs.
Sometimes there’s always that outside chance of seven wins going through too, but a side with eight victories is almost assured of it.
What that means is that the Hurricanes need just one more victory from their remaining six matches.
Interestingly, the Hurricanes will be playing the Strikers for the first time, and it could be a big test of how they about their business against the spin of Rashid Khan.
Rashid isn’t the top wicket-taker in the tournament – not yet anyway – but with 13 wickets at 12.07 and with an economy-rate of 4.9 RPO he has been by far the most potent of them all.
Teams have had to strategise around him and often those ideas have revolved around how to see off his four overs with minimum collateral damage and to score at the other end.
That has worked, to an extent, because Billy Stanlake hasn’t found his rhythm as often as the Strikers would have wanted, and the support from elsewhere has been lacking.
The Hurricanes have been aided by the resurrection of James Faulkner’s bowling, which has taken a long time for his second coming, but more vitally, D’Arcy Short’s 368 runs at the top of the order at 52 and George Bailey’s striking at 157 in a relatively low-scoring tournament has ensured the Hurricanes wins.
Prediction
Strikers to become the second team to beat the Hurricanes.
