Melbourne Stars 137

Match preview:

The Adelaide Strikers host the Melbourne Stars in the 27th game of the Big Bash League this season, and this match will begin at 7:15pm AEDT at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. You can follow it live with The Roar below.

Both teams are involved in a mid-table scrap midway through the competition. Having played six matches apiece, both have won and lost three, which means that rain aside, one of the sides will join the Renegades and the Sixers with eight points from seven matches.

And while that’s no guarantee of successes going into the second half of the league stage, it does make it easier for the winning team towards the end of the season, giving them bit more leeway.

The Stars are coming off a stinging loss at the hands of the Perth Scorchers. And that’s because they will be left with a lot of questions around their bowling, as they allowed, arguably the least effective batting line-up before that game, to get away with a chase of 147 in a mere 17.4 overs. And that at home no less.

What would worry the Stars even more is the manner in which their batting fell apart.

When Ben Dunk was going great guns, having converted a slow start into an exciting 47-ball 62, it looked like 165 was possible.

Then, Dunk got out and none of the others showed exhibited anything close to what’s needed in the death overs. Just 25 runs were scored off the final 25 balls in the innings.

Defending champions Strikers haven’t got a winning momentum so far but then the same can be said about a losing momentum too – with a win followed by two losses and two wins before losing their previous game too.

Not surprisingly, Rashid Khan has continued to remain the team’s toast with 10 wickets to his name with an economy-rate of a mere 4.91, but by the looks of things he needs support.

Because Billy Stanlake might have picked up seven wickets but he has been conceding far more than what his coach would want – 9.42 an over, the highest economy among those who have scalped at least four.

Expect Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey to continue their good batting form.

Prediction
Strikers to beat Stars on the back of a strong Rashid Khan performance.
