The enthralling, action-packed BBL 09 season resumes tonight as the table-toppers Adelaide Strikers cross swords with Sydney Thunder at the Adelaide Oval. Be sure to tune in to The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match at 7.10 PM (AEDT).
The home side has turned out to be the team to beat in this year’s edition. They are yet to be rolled over in any match and will be vying to sign off the year as well as the decade on a winning note in front of their own fans on New Year’s Eve.
The Strikers comfortably sit atop the points table with three wins and a Net Run Rate of + 0.655.
Alex Carey has been the standout performer for the Strikers and is also leading the batting charts in the tournament. He’s accumulated 186 runs in four games at a staggering of 46.50. John Wells and Jake Weatherald have also come to the party, both racking up more than 150 runs.
With the ball, Rashid Khan and Peter Siddle have been economical and have chipped away with crucial scalps throughout the tournament. The pair has nine wickets between them.
Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, are slotted on fourth in the points table. They kicked off their campaign with two consecutive wins but couldn’t squeeze past their city rivals Sydney Sixers in the captivating Sydney Smash that went right to the wire and got decided in a Super Over.
The Thunder have relied upon heavily on their skipper Callum Ferguson who is also their leading run-scorer with 156 runs in the four games. Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja have been amongst the runs too but it’s the middle-order that has been misfiring and needs to contribute significantly.
Daniel Sams has been the pick of the bowlers for the Thunder, scalping seven batsmen in the tournament as of yet. The rest of the bowling attack that usually comprises of Arjun Nair, Chris Morris, Chris Tremain, and Jonathan Cook has been there and thereabouts too but needs to chip in more in the wickets column.
The first encounter between these two sides in this year’s competition was abandoned due to unsafe playing conditions caused by raging bushfires near the venue. There is no rain forecasted for tonight’s game and we should be in for a cracking T20 contest. The only BBL game played here in this edition leaked nearly 400 runs in 36 overs and we should expect similar fireworks for tomorrow’s contest as well.
