We are down at the Adelaide Oval for what promises to be an enthralling Knockout game between the Adelaide Strikers and the Sydney Thunder. Be sure to tune in to The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match at 7:40pm (AEDT).
Adelaide had already qualified for this contest after securing third position in the group stages, whereas Sydney overpowered the ‘Cane train in the Eliminator to seal a berth in this all-important knockout match.
The Strikers went on a winning spree in the latter half of the round-robin stage, where they triumphed in four games on the trot. It was only the record partnership between Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short that halted their progress.
The Thunder, on the other hand, stumbled their way into the finals. Once there, however, they trampled an in-form Hobart Hurricanes to fetch back momentum and stride ever closer to the ultimate glory.
The Strikers have gone in with an unchanged squad – pretty much the same faces with whom they have persisted throughout this edition. Philip Salt, Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Alex Carey and Jonathan Wells form a potent top-order. Wells, in particular, has been in superb form and is also their leading run-scorer in this year’s competition with 444 runs under his belt.
Rashid Khan and Peter Siddle are in charge of holding the reins of the Strikers’ bowling battery. Wes Agar, too, has made regular appearances in the wickets column and is highly likely to retain his spot.
The Thunder, too, have decided not to tinker at all with their winning combination. Their openers, Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales, have been amongst the runs with the latter continuing his sublime form and taking his runs tally to a staggering 509 with an average of just under 40.
Sydney Thunder’s bowling has been highly impressive with Daniel Sams still leading the wickets chart. He has 27 scalps to his name at an economy rate of under 8 which are tremendous figures. Chris Morris, the South African all-rounder, has been the go-to man in the death overs.
Jonathan Cook, too, has been a reliable legspin option and it was he who stifled the Hurricanes in the Eliminator and took his best-ever BBL figures in the process.
Lots of rain is around the radar for the match day but it is forecasted that the skies will clear up by evening. The previous match played at the Adelaide Oval saw over 400 runs scored and another high-scoring affair should be on the cards.
