Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will both be looking for a victory in Cardiff today, after both sides suffered disappointing defeats to begin the tournament last weekend. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:30pm (AEST).
Afghanistan weren’t horrendous in Bristol against Australia in their opening game of the tournament, but they will no doubt be disappointed they did compete for longer in the match.
With Afghanistan batting first in the game, it was going to be an uphill struggle to beat a strong Australian outfit the minute both Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai, Afghanistan’s opening batsmen, went for ducks.
Najibullah Zadran (51) and Rahmat Shah (43) did their best to resurrect the innings, but they could only propel their country to 207, which was never going to be enough.
The Afghan bowlers could only find the three wickets between them, as Australia chased down the total in 34.5 overs. It was simply a bad day at the office for Afghanistan, and they will be looking to bounce back against Sri Lanka today.
It was also a disastrous start to the tournament for Sri Lanka, as they suffered a huge defeat to New Zealand in Cardiff.
Sri Lanka were batting first, and were bowled out for 136. There was some life in the wicket, but they should not have been bundled out for such a low total. Dimuth Karunaratne was the only highlight from a batting perspective for Sri Lanka, as the opener finished not out with 52 runs next to his name.
New Zealand chased down the total losing no wickets, which added to what was an awful day for the Sri Lankan team.
They are not a genuine contender to win the World Cup, but they are much better than what they showed in the opening game.
Prediction
As it has been stated, Sri Lanka were woeful in their opening game, but it is difficult seeing them repeating that.
As brave as Afghanistan were against Australia, Sri Lanka should have too much quality for them in this particular match. In saying that, this is quite an even fixture when one considers form.
Sri Lanka to prevail.
