Australia need early wickets on day four as England will look to continue their long fight back into the first Ashes Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 10:30am AEDT.
All eyes will be on captain Pat Cummins to see how he copes with his first big challenge and how he’s going to get through this England batting lineup.
If anyone felt that Australia were going to be able to blow England away in this first Test without any resistance, then they were reminded on day three that this England side does have genuine world talent amongst its ranks. Their bowlers stuck to the task in the first session and when their batsmen came out more than 250 runs behind after the first innings, they played well and gave very few genuine chances.
So much has been written about Joe Root this year and when he got a duck in the first innings there would have been many who scoffed at his 2021 batting record – lots of runs Joe, but still none in Australia! But in this second innings he showed much of the control and class that has allowed him to set new records in the past 12 months. He’s not a destructive batsman in the style of a Gilchrist or Pietersen, but he is a stylish player with a full suite of shots to call upon and he’s able to amass runs quietly. You suddenly check the scoreboard and he’s got a fifty with no noise and he’s set.
Getting Root out is key to Australia’s hopes and then they must skittle the middle order cheaply otherwise they could easily find themselves with a challenging fourth-innings run chase that could tests the nerves. With David Warner off the field all day yesterday with bruised ribs, you wonder if he is going to be able to bat well again in this Test.
It was curious that Cummins didn’t bowl Josh Hazlewood much yesterday. Apparently, the pace man isn’t injured but it doesn’t make sense that he didn’t get more overs considering how Australia struggled to get wickets in that final session.
This Test has been a really good one so far and with good weather forecast for day four we still have all three results possible – exciting times!
