Australia and England meet at the Adelaide Oval in the first of three ODIs. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:20pm (AEDT).
After the thrills and spills of the T20 World Cup, the cricket carnival now moves on to a three-match ODI series between Australia and England.
Looming as potentially dominant in white-ball cricket across both 50-over and T20 play, the English team will be looking to bring itself back down to earth quickly after its win over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final, and get straight back down to business against an Australian group still smarting from what was a disappointing tournament on home soil.
While a celebratory hangover is a potential problem for the English, the Australians should have no such issues; they ought to be determined to win back some of the local support that has appeared to be waning in recent times. Pat Cummins looks likely to be ready for action in his new role as captain after overcoming illness over the last couple of days, but Glenn Maxwell will be a significant loss for the hosts with a broken leg.
Aaron Finch has now moved away from his captaincy role and entered ODI retirement, with the popular Cummins charged with steering the team into the next phase of its development and hopeful success at next year’s World Cup.
Travis Head is likely to take the opening position vacated by Finch, whilst David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis will take on top-order responsibilities.
Cameron Green will join Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and Mitchell Starc in a powerful white ball attack.
England look a dominant team on paper, with Jason Roy and James Vince at the top of the order and Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali key in the middle overs should early wickets fall. Sam Curran was in superb form in the death overs during the recent T20 World Cup, and along with Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan, will present a difficult proposition for the Australian batters.
Prediction
With fine weather predicted for Adelaide, the likelihood of a firm and fast pitch should see plenty of runs scored. On that basis, and barring any post-World Cup hangover, the English batting line-up has far more form on the board, with the Aussie top order missing recently and still searching for its best form.
England to win well in game one.
