The second Ashes Test will see Australia look to hammer home their early advantage with England desperate to fight their way back into the series as the day/night Test starts in Adelaide today. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 3:00pm AEDT.

If a week is a long time in politics then four days is an eternity in professional sport. In fact, a couple of hours in today’s case.

The shock news that Pat Cummins won’t play has rocked the Australian cricket team.

But every cloud has a silver lining and now Michael Neser finally gets his chance to shine in the most remarkable circumstances. He’ll make his debut and Steve Smith will now be in charge of the team once again.

Since the comprehensive victory by Australia at the Gabba last week, the home side have had plenty of thinking to do as they have considered injury replacements and adjusting plans ahead of the second Test.

With both Dave Warner and Josh Hazlewood ending the first Test with injury concerns, people were expecting changes in the side and Pat Cummins confirmed that Jhye Richardson will replace Hazelwood who has failed to recover from a side strain.

Richardson has two Test caps to his name already from 2019 and initially won the battle to play in his first Ashes Test ahead of Michael Neser before today’s news.

Despite the changes, Australia will be heading into this day/night clash full of confidence. While many have spoken of the danger England will pose with the pink ball in the evening sessions, Australia have a perfect record playing day/night Tests.

For England, there have been some bigger changes made and they do really need to win this one.

Going 2-0 down in the series would surely be the death of them and they will look to experienced heroes Stuart Broad and James Anderson to get them this crucial win. With fast bowler Mark Wood rested for this match, England are looking to terrorise the Aussie batsmen with swing rather than scary pace.

Interestingly though, it’s the England batting lineup that needs to see the biggest improvement and not their bowlers with the Gabba Test starting to get away from them on day one when they were skittled out so cheaply. Joe Root can’t do it all himself and he needs bigger innings from players like Ben Stokes.
