Despite a better bowling performance on day two from England, the tourists are just hanging on against Australia in the Boxing Day Test. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the third day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).

England’s bowlers turned out their best performance of the Ashes series so far in Australia’s first innings. James Anderson was superb, taking 4-33 off 23 miserly overs, while Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson took two wickets each.

Australia’s total of 267 was hard going, on a pitch that was still offering plenty for the bowlers.

Marcus Harris may have played a Test career-saving innings with an important 76. Other than Marnus Labuschagne with a rare failure, the rest of Australia’s batting line-up got starts but couldn’t go on with the job.

The result was an Australian lead of 82 on the first innings, a lead which was ably assisted by Australia’s tail again wagging.

The match swung heavily in Australia’s favour in an amazing last 30 minutes. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland took two wickets each to have England reeling at 4-31 at stumps, still 51 runs in arrears.

Joe Root and Ben Stokes are at the crease and you get the sense that this is England’s last stand. If there are early wickets today, Australia may well have retained the Ashes by stumps.
