A new year has begun and as the Fourth Ashes Test gets underway at the SCG, Sydney, Australia will be hoping to start 2022 in the same style that they wrapped up 2021, while England will be desperately hoping to avoid a series whitewash. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the first day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).

Pat Cummins has confirmed that his side will only see one change to the line up that secured the Ashes at Melbourne just after Christmas. With Travis Head out, Usman Khawaja gets his chance to impress in this series while with both Josh Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson still not 100% fit, MCG hero Scott Boland will be able to see if he can make more Ashes history.

Although the series is over, Australia will not want to take their foot off the throat of the English side. They would love nothing better than to send their rivals on the long journey home having suffered a complete whitewash and there is a feeling that another loss like the one in the third Test could truly break this England side into little pieces.

England have made just the one change to their line up which is surprising considering the terrible performances of their batsmen at the MCG. With Ollie Robinson suffering from a shoulder injury, Assistant coach Graham Thorpe has confirmed that Stuart Broad will return to the side. It’s been a frustrating tour for the experienced seam bowler who commented after the series was lost at Melbourne that he was disappointed to have missed out on opportunities to play in the Tests that best suited his skills.

“I would argue that I won’t get a better chance to take wickets than at Brisbane and Melbourne,” explained Broad in his column in The Mail.

The Urn might be out of reach for this England side but they will be highly motivated to avoid a 5-0 loss and many will know that the two Tests left could be crucial for their careers. It’s quite simple really for England – they just need to bat, bowl and field better. They have to start winning sessions and putting the Australian side and especially Pat Cummins under some genuine pressure.
