After an intriguing three days, the Fourth Ashes Test from the SCG, Sydney is set for a decisive day four. Australia continue to be in the driving seat, but England could spoil the whitewash party by continuing their brave fight back and taking the Test to a draw. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the fourth day’s play from 10:00am (AEDT).

Day three was a real rollercoaster with it looking at some points as though Australia might be able to win the whole Test within the day, and then England making their bowling attack look surprisingly average at times and counter punching. England could rightly feel they took the honours at points during the day, but the overall honours still belong to Australia. They are over 150 runs ahead and have taken seven wickets already with England’s tail exposed.

With plenty of rain forecast for the next couple of days, England might be tempted to go slow at every opportunity and try to achieve a draw. If they can somehow keep batting and get the Australian lead down to sub 50 then the draw is very achievable but if Australia strike quickly today and start their second innings with a 130 run lead then they could well steal this Test and keep the whitewash on the cards.

Despite the bravery of players such as Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, England will again be frustrated that even with a good helping of luck on their side today, their top order collapsed and the team was always under incredible pressure. To save this game the top four really have to play better and some basic technique issues need to be solved quickly.

For Australia they will need to be very efficient – there may well be little playing time left in this Test so it’s time for ruthlessness.
