After four entertaining days of cricket, Australia are well placed to win the Fourth Ashes Test on day five from the SCG, Sydney. England have a long day ahead of them trying to survive and with their middle order badly impacted by injury, Australia could take a 4-0 lead before heading to Hobart. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the fifth and final day’s play from 10:00am (AEDT).
As Australia, piled on more and more runs on day four for England to chase down, you almost felt sorry for the tourists. Yes they have been outclassed and earlier in the series there were plenty of periods of really poor play. But here in Sydney many of them have battled hard and with players like Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler unable to take the field and Ben Stokes wincing every time he had to bend or turn, Joe Root’s side looked like they couldn’t wait for the end of a very hard campaign.
The task ahead of them is simple – survival. While fans would love to think that they could stand a chance of a miraculous victory, that simply isn’t on the cards. Batting three sessions and not losing 10 wickets is the very best they can hope for. But they can’t just try and survive – Stokes, Mark Wood and Bairstow showed in the first innings that the best way to stick around is to attack Australia.
For Australia this is already a special test as Usman Khawaja went down in history as only the 9th player ever to score centuries in both innings of an Ashes Test. But a victory and 4-0 lead with one to play is the real prize. Quick wickets is the key – England’s middle order is physically broken but players like Joe Root and Dawid Malan have shown they can bat and bat. Australia need the top four back in the sheds as quickly as possible.
To achieve that they need to be patient ironically and not try and force things. Australia lost their way a bit on day three when they moved away from their line and length metronomic approach and Cummins needs to make sure his team stay focused.
There are rumours of rain at points throughout the day but hopefully which England will welcome but there should be enough play in the day for Australia to wrap this up.
