The Ashes finale is upon us, with Australia looking to complete a 4-0 series win over England in Tasmania’s first ever Ashes Test. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the the first day’s play from 2:30pm (AEDT).
This tour has been a nightmare for England from the moment Rory Burns was bowled first ball of the first Test by Mitchell Starc. However, they salvaged some pride from the wreckage with a fighting draw in Sydney, to avoid a disastrous whitewash.
It took a stonewalling effort from the tail at the death to do it, with Australia just one wicket from victory. Had rain not intervened across the Test, then it may well have been a different story.
This Test was originally slated for Perth, where the home side have traditionally dominated England. However, the WA government’s strict border rules have forced its movement to Tasmania, a venue which has traditionally been seamer-friendly. With the added boost of the pink ball, this could be the closest to home conditions the visitors get down under.
At the selection table, Australia confirmed on match eve Usman Khawaja would retain his spot in the team after twin centuries at the SCG. However, he moves from number five to opening to accommodate Travis Head’s return after contracting COVID-19, with Marcus Harris making way.
Doubts also hang over Scott Boland, in doubt with a rib injury that could put his incredible start to his Test career on hold. Should he miss out, Adelaide hero Jhye Richardson is all but certain to replace him.
For England, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has already been sent home with a broken finger, with uncapped gloveman Sam Billings the frontrunner for a shock Test debut. Elsewhere, spinner Jack Leach could once again make way should conditions necessitate a four-seamer attack, especially with Ben Stokes unlikely to bowl even if he plays through the pain of a side strain.
