An in-form Australia face their biggest challenge of the World Cup to date when they take on England in a T20 World Cup showdown that offers fans a nice taster ahead of the Ashes summer. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).
Group 1 of the Super 12s will have an outright leader tonight, with the last two undefeated sides coming together. Whilst England were expected to be tracking this well, Australia has been somewhat of a surprise. They will be tested again here.
After a scratchy win over the Proteas, Australia was dominant against a Sri Lankan side that had strung a number of wins together from the qualifying stages.
Most pleasing for the Aussies would have been the return to form of Aaron Finch and David Warner, despite Warner being dropped early. If Australia are to reach the business end of the tournament, these two need to be at the top of their game.
The bowling unit seems set, with the selection of the thre quicks unexpectedly working well in the spin-friendly UAE conditions. Adam Zampa is also proving himself to be one of the best T20 slow bowlers going around.
England, along with Pakistan, are the two form teams of the World Cup so far, They have enjoyed easy wins over the West Indies and Bangladesh, with their only issue perhaps a lack of batting practice for their middle and lower order.
Jason Roy and Jos Buttler are at the top of their games and can take the match away from Australia early if they get starts. There is no let up in the English batting order, with their top 7 all very dangerous.
The absence of Jofra Archer was seen as an issue pre-tournament, but it hasn’t had an impact yet. Moeen Ali and Tymal Mills have been standouts so far.
Prediction
For both teams, this should prove their toughest match to date.
England are one of the favourites for the tournament whilst Australia, with their best team on the park, take on a much better appearance.
It will be a close one but, unfortunately for an Australian, England have too much firepower and will just about lock in a semi final spot.
England by 20 runs or 3 wickets.
