Australia will resume 0/24 on day three at the Sydney Cricket Ground in response to India’s first innings total of 622. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the day, starting from 10:30am (AEDT).
India resumed yesterday 4/303 with Cheteshwar Pujara (130 not out) and Hanuma Vihari (39 not out) at the crease.
If Tim Paine’s side were hoping for a quick declaration going into day two, Virat Kohli definitely did not give them their wish.
The Australian bowlers bowled until they broke. Nathan Lyon did claim Vihari relatively early in the day, who fell for 42, as he was caught in close by Marnus Labuschagne.
That was about as good as it got for the Aussies, with Pujara and Rishabh Pant piling on the runs for the Indians.
Pujara continued to wear down the Australian side, but he was eventually dismissed for 193 as he was caught and bowled by Lyon.
Despite the dismissal of the best batsman of the series, Pant did not stop. The youngster piled on a big hundred, playing with poise and flair, and finished 159 not out.
Ravindra Jadeja also showed his worth with the bat, producing a handy 81, only to fall 19 runs short of his hundred when Lyon bowled him.
Jadeja’s dismissal saw Kohli declare at 7/622 with just under an hour to play for the remainder of day two.
Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja were the two chosen to open the batting for Australia to conclude the day, and it was not without drama.
Khawaja was given a lifeline when he was dropped by Pant off Mohammed Shami’s bowling when he was on zero.
Harris looked the goods finishing 19 not out, and Khawaja also managed to remain not out at stumps with five runs next to his name. Australia will resume on day three with the score 0/24.
The Australian batsmen just need to bat and bat time to give the bowlers a rest. It is staggering just how many overs the Aussies have fielded in this Test series, and they just simply need a break.
A win will not be circling around the minds of Paine’s side, but they can certainly play for some pride, especially considering the amount of criticism they have received when it comes to the performances with the bat.
