Match result:

Delays due to rain and bad light have left Australia with ten wickets to hold onto tomorrow as they hope for a draw after India enforced a follow-on.

Final score
India 7/662d
Australia 300 and 0/6

Match preview:

The fourth day of the Sydney Test between Australia and India will be played on Sunday, January 6 with the hosts trying to thwart the visitors from running away with the game yet again. This fourth day will begin at 10am local time and you can follow it live with The Roar below.

On what has been the first batting-friendly pitch of the season, the Australian batsmen have shown some resolute and yet, come off second-best so far.

After all you would have thought that one of the six batsmen to fall on the third day of this Sydney Test would have gone on to score a 100. Even better, be still be batting at stumps, aiming to get oneself a bigger, ‘daddy’ hundred.

For a while Marcus Harris gave that hope.

A career-best 79 consisted of some of the most sparkling drives against the seamers and cuts against the spinners.

Then Virat Kohli grew wiser, the ball became softer, the run-scoring became more difficult and Harris lost his patience and was bowled to a nothing shot.

Usman Khawaja had been missed last night, a straightforward catch dropped by Rishabh Pant but other than show glimpses of what he can do, he didn’t do too much else.

A few good shots played and then he got out trying to take on Kuldeep Yadav.

Marnus Labuschagne, in his maiden Test at three, disproved theories he didn’t belong there but again, the start wasn’t made to count.

In what was an instance of inspired captaincy Kohli set a field to exactly the kind of shot-making that Labuschagne was looking for, Mohammad Shami delivered the perfect ball, and then Rahane bagged the perfect catch to send him back.

Shaun Marsh didn’t even get a start and surrendered his wicket meekly, described by Michael Clarke as ‘lazy shot-making’ and when Kuldeep sent back Travis Head and Tim Paine on either side of the tea-break, it looked like Australia needed more than just pitches to play in their favour.

Thankfully for them, Peter Handscomb’s batting against spin and Pat Cummins’ grittiness overall came handy as they saw off a further 14.3 overs before rain brought an early close to the day’s play.

So that very, very tiny window of opportunity to even turn things around by hitting back at India with a score of more than 600 of their own seems to have receded and what Australia will need to do on day four is to bat long and ensure the Indian lead doesn’t swell into something unmanageable.

Because if Australia aren’t able to bat a couple of sessions, they could be facing a nervous few hours on the final day in an attempt to save the Test match on what might not remain as flat a pitch.

Prediction
India to grab a 250-plus-run lead, not enforce the follow-on and set a target of 400-plus in 80 overs.
