Australia will turn their Cricket World Cup campaign up a gear as things get serious for the first time against tournament favourites India at The Oval. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

The Australians have played two matches at the World Cup, but playing Afghanistan and the West Indies, they were expected to win both.

There can be no denying the fact they dominated the Afghanis a little over a week ago in their first encounter, but the West Indies for all money looked like they would beat them numerous times during the encounter at Trent Bridge a couple of days ago.

Australia escaped with an unblemished record on the back of some big lower-order hitting, good captaincy from Aaron Finch and great bowling from Mitchell Starc.

But they certainly didn’t escape without plenty of problems to address before taking on the best limited overs team in the world, namely, the lack of runs at the top of the order and a struggle with the ball through the middle orders.

They must get their bowling right during the middle overs as a matter of urgency, and it’ll be interesting to see whether either Nathan Lyon or Jason Behrendorff are given a look in, while the batting against the new ball was terrible against the West Indies, but will only be really a concern if it’s to happen again with multiple bad shots.

India have only played one game in their campaign after starting almost a week after every other nation, and while they flogged South Africa with relative ease, they are going to need a strong start.

Fatigue is going to become an issue for the Indians with so many matches bunched together at the end of the tournament, so they need to keep winning and get on a roll during the early going.

Given the form of Mitchell Starc, this is going to be a real test for them early on, and they showed vulnerability against good quick bowling and a moving ball in their warm-up game against New Zealand.

Australia will need to play on that, and if they can remove batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan with the new ball to expose Virat Kohli and the middle order early, then it’ll be job well done.

India’s bowling attack is their biggest advantage, with Jasprit Bumrah currently close to the best quick bowler in the world, and their spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav set to wreak hell throughout the tournament.

Prediction
The Aussies are outsiders here, and probably rightly so. They need to improve, but they have the wood over India, and these conditions should suit them more than the ones in India did. Still, this definitely could go either way and should be an absolute cracker between two superpowers.

Australia in a close one.
