The 2019 World Cup is looming, now just four months away, and Australia begin their preparation at home with a three-match ODI series against India.

Currently second on the ICC ODI team rankings – behind World Cup hosts England – India are ready to fire against a struggling Australia.

Seemingly stronger mentally and physically, India have been able to perform across the Test format and will look to continue this dominance in the limited-over game.

India have been firing in their 50-over fixtures, winning 14 of 20 ODIs in 2018. Unlike Australia, who won just two of 13 games in the format last year.

Players from both sides are still fighting for positions in the World Cup ODI squads to travel in May and will be out to prove their individual worth to the team in this series.

Balance will be key: is two spinners the way to go? How can the batting order be tweaked? Are some of the questions coaching staff and selectors will be considering.

Mitch Marsh was hospitalised during the week with gastritis and has been ruled out of the first ODI, with fellow West Australian batsman Ashton Turner joining the squad to cover him.

All three fast bowlers from the test matches have been rested, with a two-test series against Sri Lanka also around the corner.

Jason Behrendorff, Jyhe Richardson, Billy Stanlake and veteran Peter Siddle will fight for the fast bowling positions, with Marcus Stoinis to likely take the ‘allrounder’ spot.

Australia’s batsmen have struggled in recent times, but selectors will be hoping some Big Bash form for the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey and Marcus Stoinis can improve their batting woes.

Prediction
Australian fans are hoping a retro kit can inspire a retro Aussie performance, but India will continue to be too good for this outfit.

India to draw first blood in Sydney.
