India’s tour of Australia continues with a three-match T20 series, the first of which gets underway tonight in Canberra. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 7pm (AEST).
Those in the Australian team who played in the IPL will be looking to put behind what was a difficult tournament for them, perhaps with the exception of Marcus Stoinis and David Warner, both of whom picked up injuries in the ODI series.
Warner’s groin strain from Sunday’s second ODI has forced him to miss the remaining limited-overs fixtures, with D’Arcy Short named as his replacement. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have also been rested so they can prepare for the Test series.
Marcus Stoinis could return as a specialist batsman after missing the final two games of the ODI series due to a side strain picked up in the first ODI.
While Australia assess their options, there are no such problems for India, who actually benefited from some of the changes they made to their side before the final ODI on Wednesday, in which the tourists ended the series on a high with a 13-run victory.
The Australians may have had an IPL to forget, but that couldn’t be further from the case for India, whose players will be looking to carry on their good form from the tournament into this T20 series.
Australia may have the upper hand on their rivals in recent matches between the two sides, but it looks like the shoe will be on the other foot as India look to capitalise against a slightly-depleted Australian side.
By no means should Australia be counted out with Glenn Maxwell, in particular, using the ODIs to give us a taste of what he will be unleashing when batting in these T20 games.
It should be a close and thrilling contest.
