Australia put themselves on the front foot against India at the Adelaide Oval, but the attention will turn to run scoring on Day 2 as they get a chance to prove the doubters wrong. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 11am (AEDT).
Australia restricted India to a score of 9 for 250 at stumps, but it was a mix of both poor shots and great bowling.
Coming into this series it was clear the hosts’ strength was going to be their all-star bowling attack, featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
They lived up to that billing yesterday, with the three quicks getting four wickets in the first session.
At one point, India were 4 for 41 and in all sorts of bother, and only Cheteshwar Pujara mustered any sort of fight. He had 123 to his name before being freakishly run out by Cummins on what ended up being the last ball of the day.
While some of the middle and lower order made solid impressions, it was hardly enough for the tourists, who went to stumps at 9 for 250. Final men Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami need to add as many runs as possible on Day 2.
We have often seen the best batting conditions at the Adelaide Oval on Days 2 and 3, and as long as Australia can see off the new ball, they will get the chance to capitalise on what looks a good deck for run-scoring.
When India get in the field they will need something of a special day out – limiting runs, putting the pressure on and taking wickets.
Yet, their bowling attack isn’t one which is likely to excel on a pitch which had something in it for the new bowlers, but not a great deal more. And there’s likely to be even less movement in it given the amount of sun and heat it copped yesterday, stripping every bit of moisture out of the pitch.
If that is the case, the Aussie batsmen could be in for a bumper day as they try to build a first-innings lead – but given this series was expected to be low-scoring, there’s no guarantee Australia’s inexperienced order will prosper, even if their side is ahead in the game at the start of play.
