Final score
India 250 and 307
Australia 235 and 4/104
India hold all the cards in the first Test of their series against Australia as Day 4 rolls around at the Adelaide Oval. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from the earlier time of 10:30am (AEDT).
The tourists are in a commanding position heading into Day 4, although not completely running away with the victory.
A rain-affected Day 3 leaves us with a long fourth and fifth day ahead and plenty of cricket ahead on a deck which, for the most part, has been pretty tough to bat on.
India ran up 250 in their first innings, which, at the time at least, seemed well below par.
Australia’s wickets fell with regularity when they got a chance with the stick though, on a pitch where batsmen have never properly felt ‘in’ and set at the crease.
Instead, batsmen would make a start and then depart shortly afterwards, with the hosts first innings coming to an end on 235 yesterday.
There could be some limited talk about the issues with the weather, but the bottom line is that Australia are well behind in the match.
For the first time yesterday afternoon, the pitch seemed to be fractionally easier to bat on, although it was Cheteshwar Pujara again doing the damage.
The first innings centurion guided India to stumps, sitting on 40 not out. For a long chunk of time, he put up a stubborn resistance with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who was 34.
While the run rate was about two and a half and things were slightly easier, the ball still wasn’t coming on all that well and things were a grind for the batsmen, as they have been for the entire match.
Working into India’s favour now though is that they are 3 for 151, have a lead of 166 and can continue to be patient on Day 4 with a mountain of time left in the match.
With 196 overs to go, there is no rush for India, who could easily bat through to tea today before putting the hammer down and then sending Australia in for a tricky period before stumps – provided they can last that long, which in itself looks somewhat unlikely.
Australia, on the other hand, need wickets and they need them urgently. If they are still bowling at lunch after a two and a half hour opening session, things will be starting to get away with them, given a chase of anything pushing 250 is going to be tough.
