Match results:

Australia have fallen agonisingly short of victory in Adelaide, with India hanging on to take the first Test by 31 runs.

The hosts, chasing 323, hung around with their tail all day, but in the end, couldn’t hold out.

It’s just India’s sixth Test win in Australia and second in Adelaide.

Match preview:

Australia have the challenge of batting out the day to salvage a draw at the Adelaide Oval with India well on top after four days of the first Test of the series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 10:30am AEDT.

Tim Paine’s side are currently 4-104, chasing a further 219 runs to gain the win. Virat Kohli’s side only require six more wickets, and if they take those six wickets, it will be India’s first Test win on Australian soil since 2007.

There is no denying that India are the favourites here. The only thing that will be playing in the back of Australia’s mind is what they achieved in the UAE back in October.

Paine’s side managed to bat the final day out of the first Test against Pakistan in a not too dissimilar situation to the one that is currently facing them in Adelaide.

Shaun Marsh (31 not out) and Travis Head (11 not out) are currently at the crease, and the only way one could see an Australian victory is if these two batted for the majority of the day.

A total of 219 more runs for an Australian win certainly is not out of the question when you consider the ability these two have, but a lot will have to go right.

Playing for the draw and regrouping ahead of the second Test in Perth seems the more likely approach from the Aussies.

The pressure is no doubt on India. Kohli knows better than anyone that India will not have a better chance to defeat an Australian side on Australian soil, and by getting a victory in the first Test, it will be a massive psychological advantage for India.

Prediction
Despite Australia’s heroics in the UAE not that long ago in the Test series against Pakistan, I cannot see them repeating those scenes.
