Australia need to win to keep the series alive when they take on India tonight at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Australian cricket team is in danger of forming an unfortunate habit. In the third ODI and the first T20, Australia bowled first and had India in trouble before letting them get out with plenty of runs late.
In both cases, the Aussies failed to chase down the total. They will be desperate to avoid a repeat tonight.
Of course, the loss of David Warner has hurt the team and Aaron Finch seems certain to join the injury list. But that wasn’t the reason they lost on Friday night.
With the exception of Moises Henriques, the middle order of Australia got bogged down and lost regular wickets to super-subs Yuzvendra Chahal and T Natarajan. It proved too much for the lower order to recover from.
Earlier on, Adam Zampa and Henriques were the pick of the Australian bowlers but the death bowling of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood was below par.
Ravindra Jadeja only played half a game but he was instrumental in getting India to a defendable total with an undefeated 44 off 23 balls. KL Rahul was also impressive at the top of the order with a stylish half-century.
Chahal entered the game under dubious circumstances and had a huge impact, taking the wickets of Finch, Steve Smith and Matt Wade on his way to 3/25 off his four overs.
Natarajan was almost equally impressive, trapping Glenn Maxwell early for two. He took 3/30 from his allotted overs.
Prediction
You do feel Australia have missed a trick in Game 1, with Jasprit Bumrah rested and Virat Kohli having a poor game by his standards. They can’t bank on this happening again.
If Finch does miss out, Wade may start with his Hurricanes partner, D’Arcy Short. With Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green available, Justin Langer does have options.
But it will be the likes of Smith and Maxwell who will turn this game in Australia’s favour. Back at the SCG, both will be looking for plenty of runs.
Jadeja has been pivotal in the last two games for India and his loss will too big a gap to fill.
Australia by ten runs or three wickets.
