Australia will feel that they got the better of Day 1 in the second Test against India and will want to hammer home their advantage in Day 2. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Day 2 from 1:20pm (AEDT).

Ahead of this match there was a lot spoken about the spicy, green Perth wicket as if it was some sort of chilli that could blow batsmen’s heads off at any point.

The first day was definitely entertaining and the wicket helped provide a good stage for the teams but there was nothing overly scary about the deck.

The day was a really interesting back and forth as each side had periods of dominance with overall honours going to Australia by the time the final ball of the day was bowled.

Having won the toss and electing to bat, 112 for the opening partnership was a great start for the Aussies.

Marcus Harris continues to impress and Aaron Finch will be happy that he didn’t repeat his duck from the first innings in the Adelaide Test.

They were looking very good and would have been eyeing up a good 350 first innings total at least. But the Indians came back in a great afternoon spell and got the Aussies from 0/112 to 4/148 as the bowlers got their line and length right.

They were able to get some good bounce from the pitch and the Indian batsmen would have had some concerns in the back of their minds about batting last.

The Aussies then took back some control with Shaun Marsh and Travis Head both putting on good scores.

Head will have been disappointed though with how he got himself out – he was on 58 and playing well and chose to launch his bat at a wide one from Mohammed Shami.

Unfortunately he never got hold of it and it looped to deep third man for a catch.

Pat Cummins and Tim Paine did well to survive the final period of the match with the Indians making the new ball really zip about at times.

There were a couple of balls that no one could quite believe didn’t get a wicket and Virat Kohli will be disappointed that they didn’t get one more wicket before stumps.

The first session of Day 2 is going to be an important one. Tim Paine will want his side to push on and turn their 277 runs into at least 350.

Obviously the Indians will want wickets and quickly. If they can skittle out the final four Aussies cheaply then they will feel good.

Of course it’ll then be their turn to face an excited Australian bowling line up – all of whom will be eager to get a go on this wicket.
