Ireland will open their T20 World Cup with a clash against the in-form tournament favourites Australia, at Providence Stadium on Monday morning. Join The Roar for live coverage of the match, starting from 7am (AEDT).

Australia’s World Cup began seamlessly against Pakistan on Saturday morning with a convincing 52-run victory.

Their win was set up by the batting efforts of Alyssa Healy (48 runs), Beth Mooney (48 runs) and Meg Lanning (41 runs) and backed up in the field by some good bowling from Megan Schutt (2/13) and Georgia Wareham (2/18).

The class of the Australian outfit over their Pakistan counterparts was evident from the get-go, but they admitted post-match that runs were left out there and ideally should have bowled Pakistan out within the 20 overs.

The Southern Stars will look to continue this dominance over the weaker, less experienced Ireland side.

Ireland qualified for this World Cup in July 2018; an exciting achievement for a side that suffers a severe lack of international opportunities.

In fact, the Irish Women have only played six matches between their last World T20 game in India in March 2016 and the qualifying tournament this year.

During the warm-ups for this tournament they lost by six wickets to Bangladesh – who also qualified in July – and then beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets, which would have been a confidence booster heading into the pool games.

It’s Ireland’s first game of the World Cup and a very tough first assignment at that.

Players to watch
Alyssa Healy (Australia)
Healy opened her World Cup campaign on Saturday morning with 48 runs and continued with two stumpings and a catch in the Pakistan innings. Named player of the match, Alyssa Healy is in fine form with the bat and will look to add to her run tally against Ireland.

Kim Garth (Ireland)
The rising star, who won the Women’s Big Bash League with the Alyssa Healy and the Sydney Sixers last summer, was just 14 when she made her debut in the national side. Now, at 22 years of age, she is a right-handed all-rounder and will be hoping to help Ireland to some success this tournament.

Prediction
Australia know these pool matches are must wins and they should get it done comfortably over Ireland.
