Heading into Day 3, Australia are in control of the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 10:30am (AEDT) as the Black Caps batting order attempts to combat the Aussie bowling attack.
Travis Head helped Australia to a dominant first innings total as he notched up his second Test century and defied his critics in style at the MCG.
The South Australian had strong support from Steve Smith (85) and captain Tim Paine (79) as the Aussies piled on 467 before they were bowled out.
Neil Wagner toiled as hard as ever, removing Smith for the third time in three innings on his way to claiming 4/83, to go with seven wickets in the Perth Test.
Though Tom Blundell – a middle-order keeper-batsman by trade, thrown into the deep end to replace under-performing opener Jeet Raval – looked the goods early, when he was caught behind off the bowling of Pat Cummins, Black Caps captain Kane Williamson soon followed as James Pattinson picked up his first Boxing Day Test wicket in four years.
The Aussies thought they’d jagged one more NZ scalp before the close of play with Ross Taylor given out LBW off Pattinson, before a wise review from the veteran saw the decision overturned.
The Black Caps will be desperate for Taylor and opener Tom Latham to produce a big partnership as they hope to avoid a similar collapse to that seen in the opening Test.
